I think Carpenter would of had to play a pro-bowl caliber season for seattle to resign him and even then it would've been a long shot. Now looking ahead to next year Seattle needs a plug in play LG with size that he won't have trouble physically getting mauled in the trenches his entire rookie year. Below are some prospects that could be had in the middle rounds that might be able to hold up in the NFC west.

Daryl Williams,OT,OU
6'6, 329lbs:
Williams is the starting RT for a potent OU rushing attack. Williams has trouble in space as most run blockers do so move him inside to LG and let him try to move DT's off the LOS.

Tyrus Thompson,OT,OU
6'5, 336lbs
Thompson is the LT in the same running attack and is a athlete with higher upside than Williams. At 6'5 336lbs Thompson is a big man who could look like big Carp with a helmet on. Thompson is a solid run blocker with higher athletic upside who could play RT in a pinch.

Austin Shephard,OT, Alabama
6'5 320lbs
Shephard is the RT for Bama and is regarded as a supperior run blocker who plays for a pro style offense. Seattle could slide him into LG where his quickness as a OT and physicality could be better used inside in the NFL.

Seattle needs to find a healthy n slightly more athletic version of James Carpenter in the draft becuase Sweezy is the next OL getting paid in Seattle. IMO Seattle needs a LG that moves DT's off the ball and can stonewall a Calais Campbell or Darnell Dockett bull rush. Carpenter when healthy and in shape has done alot of good in the run game and thats where Seattle makes its money in the run game. When Seattle went spread they struggled when they feed Beastmode and used play action they had success. The above prospects are all the same type a run blocker, with size, who struggles with pass pro on the outside but can be hidden at LG.

If they don't re-sign Carpenter, depth at offensive tackle may be the more immediate need than left guard. Alvin Bailey looked real good with his interior pass blocking. But moving Bailey inside permanently leaves a big hole at backup LT. Lemuel Jeanpierre could return as the utility guy at all three interior spots. Stephen Schilling and/or Patrick Lewis might also return as interior guys. That leaves Garry Gilliam as our lone backup OT.

All good points. I suspect that behind closed doors the Hawks have already anointed Bailey as the LG of the future. The bigger issue will be finding more tackle depth, and knowing our FO, they will probably target 'swing' tackles.
