Thompson played safety, linebacker and running back while at Washington and has been considered one of the 2015 draft's most versatile prospects. The 6'0," 228-pound Thompson has said he wants to play outside linebacker in the NFL. NFL.com's Mike Mayock lists him as the No. 2 safety prospect.

"You know, I think he's a safety that drops down like a linebacker," Petersen said. "That's what I think he is. He can tackle like a linebacker. He's pretty explosive. He's a physical guy. I know he sees himself as a linebacker. That's where he spent the last three years. What do I think is his best position? Running back. I know he doesn’t want to do that. He probably wants to play longer. He knows the shelf life of running backs. He's just so unique because he's just a football player."

He could be a poor man's Kam Chancellor for some team, a safety that frequently lines up in the box like a linebacker.

Wish he would have played running back in the bowl game. That was a major setback. We really could have used him, especially in that agonizing first half.

I hope I'm wrong but I don't see him as an NFL player. The Wilcox hybrid SLB role did not serve him well from a development standpoint.

I agree with Petersen. Shaq was the best player on the field every time he lined up at RB. Which is really saying something, given his lack of experience at the position.

Is Shaq and an NFL RB? That is debatable. But in college, he clicked at RB in a big way. His style was reminiscent of David Wilson, who was linear and stiff but otherwise outstanding, setting records at Virginia Tech. Wilson bombed in the NFL for the Giants, though Coughlin's old school nature played a big role in that.

Shaq has the tools to be a Jeron Johnson type at safety. As a LB, I think he's a better version of Mason Foster. If the big plays go away, he'd be nondescript. The selling point would have to be that the big plays aren't going anywhere. Honey Badger is the comp Shaq will want GMs to make. Shaq will earn money with big plays, not by being the glue of a defense.
