Looking at guys that are possibilities to step up at LB for us if Irvin leaves. First off... Looking at the prospects that are projected to go day 1, I'm just not that impressed with this draft. I think this might be one of the worst drafts in recent history
in regards to linebackers, but I do like a few guys that are kind of flying under the radar. I must say though.. After Darron Lee and Myles Jack are off the board, things start looking dicey. You're looking at prototype size that doesn't have the production or physical ability, you're looking at tweeners or you're looking at guys with durability issues. These are the 3 guys I'm liking us to throw in the mix if we can land one or two of them on the 3rd day of the draft.
The more I look at Tanner McEvoy... The more I'm loving the prospect of us landing this kid. Kind of projects as a safety more than a LB, but the kid can flat out ball. This is one of those guys that will be able to do it all and do it all very well. When a program like Wisconsin uses someone on both sides of the ball at numerous positions and they produce no matter where you put them; I think you have to make a play on that kind of player. I really think he can be a Polamalu type player that moves around everywhere on the defense and just wreaks havoc. You have to account for him or he's going to make plays.
Curt Maggitt out of Tennessee - Monster playmaker that had great production at Tennessee... Durability is an issue, but he could be a terror if he checks out and he could probably be had on 3rd day of the draft. Shows great speed and explosion on film, gets off of blocks well and he's adequate in coverage. Not McEvoy good in coverage, but adequate. Possesses prototype size and abilities for the outside in our defense.
Liking David Perkins as a backfield specialist. He absolutely wreaks havoc on the backfield. Explosive off the snap, sheds blocks well and closes on the ball extremely well. I'd say this is probably the guy that's most similar to what Irvin was coming out, but I don't see him drop into coverage hardly at all, so it's hard to say if he's an every down LB. Also plays a bit undisciplined when it comes to maintaining gap control at times.
