My intent here is to just get a feel for what is going on around the Pac-12. Time prevents me from listing all so I'll just post what I see as the most relevant. Please take any comments I make with a grain of salt as I haven't watched many of these games and I am just commenting on what little take-away I am getting from the information available to me. Also, please, any of you fans of other teams please insert or correct as you see fit.
UW 21 vs Utah 7: Most of us here watched the game and I am guessing most would agree that it shouldn't have been that close and in fact it seemed as though we were trying to give it away at the end. Jake wasn't his best and the O-line was worse but Myles Gaskin ran like his life depended on it and the defense was TOUGH. https://www.google.com/search?safe=acti ... sL0&surl=1
USC 14 vs Texas 37: Texas always fields great athletes coming from a state where high school football is KING but this year they aren't highly regarded. Unfortunately for USC, they are still good enough to kick their butts. What happened here? USC with all those 5-star athletes continues to be the most under-performing team in the NCAA. Oregon 35 vs San Jose St.22: This is a team that WSU blanked 31-0 last week. Oregon's QB, Justin Herbert, whom many are claiming as a high NFL pick next year, had his second game against inferior competition where he completed less than 50% of his passes and threw 2-INT's in each game. Yet he seems to overcome that with big plays. I think Oregon's defense still has issues as well. I think they will have their hands full when they host Bryce Love and the rest of the Stanford team next week at ESPN's College Game Day. Arizona St. 21 vs San Diego St. 28: Was really hoping that ASU would come into our game ranked but another upset by an unranked team: https://www.google.com/search?q=arizona ... afe=active
WSU 59 vs Eastern Washington 24: I don't know how much can be gleaned from this game other than WSU seems to be much better than expected this year. Stanford 30 vs UC Davis 10: Stanford had a rocky start against a much inferior opponent. Their QB, K.J. Costello, had been having a good early season but only threw for 200 yds against a team that had been giving up over 300 yds a game against much lesser competition.Bryce Love did not play however and Stanford looked to saving it for their ESPN College Game Day meeting next week with Oregon. Stanford looks right now to be UW's toughest competition this season but we will know much more after next week's game with the Ducks. UCLA14 vs Fresno St.38: The"other" LA school also has a freshman QB. UCLA is now 0-3 under Chip Kelly and much like USC, southern Cali residents are are asking what is going on? The former genius known as Chip Kelly is an interesting case. His biggest success by far was the time he spent at Oregon with his up-tempo spread offense with players like LaMichael James and then redshirt phenom Marcus Mariota. Unfortunately for Chip though, none of his innovative offensive strategies transferred to the NFL and after successive tenures at Philly and SF he is back in the college game at UCLA.
So, the question remains, is he an offensive genius or was it just the result of having some really great players? I think it is probably a combination of both, i.e., it's a great strategy, but only if you have the proper tools to implement it. Much like the option offense Rick Neuheisel implemented at UW, it worked great when Marques Tuiasosopo ran it but terrible when Isaiah Stanback did.
