If the season gets cancelled, how does the next draft work?

Discuss your thoughts about anything College Football or NFL draft. Recruiting, Projections, and Mock drafts, Etc. LANGUAGE: PG-13
  • Do the Bengals just get 2 #1 overall picks because they sucked for one year?

Anyone know what the plan is?

How are they going to determine draft slots if there is no season?

(Hoping this conversation is moot because the season goes just fine and the Seahawks end up winning the SB on a pick six by Adams...but it has been a weird year.)

  • If the NFL is cancelled, so is College............
So, who would they be drafting?

I don't think it's quite that simple. Obviously the NCAA and the NFL are separate entities, so they could make different decisions about whether or not to have a season. You're probably right though, if the NFL chooses not to have a season, the NCAA would almost certainly do the same. It's possible for there to still be a draft though, even without a college or NFL season. It would suck having to choose from players who have been sitting out for a year, but still possible.

If there's no college season and no draft, what happens to player eligibility? Does everybody get an extra year? If so, what happens to incoming freshmen? Schools only get 85 scholarships, so how do they handle all the extra players?

Also, if there's no draft next year, what happens with all the draft picks that have been traded in upcoming drafts like the Seahawks 2021 1st round pick that was traded to the Jets? Do they just vanish, or would everything bump back a year, and we'd be without our 2022 and 2023 1st round picks?

  • Exactly the question, because usually the trade agreement has a year next to the draft slot.

So 2021 draft pick in the 1st round, does that roll over to 2022 if there is no 1st round?

If college plays a limited season and there is no NFL season, is there still a draft?

Do the Bengals then get 2 #1 picks overall because they still technically have the worst record?

  • Perhaps a weighted lottery? I believe the NHL did something along those lines when they didn't have an 04-05 season.
