Oregon's NCAA penalties expected to be announced this week

Discuss your thoughts about anything draft related. Mocks, College and Pro. Knock yourselves out!!! RATING: PG-13
  • I'm guessing that penalties will be lighter then most expect.

    A few scholarship losses.
One coach on some recruitment restrictions (allowed less visits).
    No bowl ban.

But, we'll see. Even if we do get a bowl ban I'm just glad its finally going to be over. I think the worst part of it has already happened for the Ducks in that opposing coaches have been able to negatively recruit about the situation for the last 2 and a half years, i'm sure that's cost us a few good players.

  • We've been dealing with that kind of negative negative recruiting since 2006 due to the Bush mess.

Thanks a lot, Reggie. Would it kill you to man up and apologize?

  • I'm actually surprised that Reggie Bush hasn't apologized to that fan base. Has he even acknowledged the problems he caused in any way?

  • I know Oregon is trying to spin that it's unrelated, but sure seems like they're hanging their long time compliance guy out to dry hoping he'll take the brunt of the fall. I think I read where Gary Gray has been in the athletic department close to 30 years, and he's conveniently had his retirement announced a couple days before sanction happen.

Although I can't stand Oregon athletics (mostly because it's a pro franchise that is very tenuously associated with a school, at a level even more egregious than elsewhere) the allegations are innocuous at best and don't/shouldn't add up to any severe sanctions. That being said, if they are tagged as a repeat violator, all bets are off.

  • I'm hearing as part of the penalty U of O will be required to let UW win once a decade.

But on the real, i'm nervous. I don't expect a bowl ban, but ya never know with the NCAA. Whatever it is, it is I guess. Mostly i'm just glad its over, even if we do get punished more severely then I expect.

  • I heard part of the ruling will be that Oregon will be limited to only 4 uniform combinations for the next 2 years.

  • Wow...... USC got a modern day death penalty (it would have killed any other non-traditional powerhouse). and Oregon losses one scholarship???? Am I missing something. For the Record I have no dog in this fight, as I neither a Duck or Trojan fan.

But the punishment is ridiculously small. Especially given NCAA's record of bringing the hammer.

1.5 year show cause on Kelly which literally does nothing as he's in the NFL
Loss of one scholly a year for 2 years (teams rarely use all 25, Oregon took 19 last year and 21 2 years ago)
Loss of a few recruiting visits that no school uses all of anyway

More of a slap on the empty air vaguely near their wrist

  • As a Husky fan I was hoping for the death penalty.

I'm glad Chip got singled out. For the life of me I don't understand how a guy getting paid millions for what most would consider a dream job could be such a miserable sonofabitch. I'm in favor of anything and everything that puts him in a bad light.

The sanctions are reasonable. What happens out here doesn't even compare to the SEC quagmire that is essentially ignored. Essentially UW got screwed in the 90s, USC got screwed a few years ago, Oregon gets off light, that's just the breaks sometimes.

  • I think Chip Kelly did the right thing going to the NFL. I do wonder though, if he knew for a fact that the punishment to Oregon would be this minor, might he have stayed at least one more year? Maybe, maybe not, but it did appear to factor into his deliberation during the last year.

  • PFT brought up an incredibly valid point on the Kelly matter; Terrell Pryor was suspended for HIS NCAA infractions...BUT...Jim Tressel (Jseahawks favorite coach, oddly enough) and Chip Kelly wont receive a thing? I hated the suspension of Pryor, it just lacked sense. But, this is a double standard.

Oh Rog, you're such a fair and equal dude.

I hated Kelly at Oregon...but I dig him now. He seems to be the result of Pete Carroll and Rainman having a baby.

    Brilliant analogy.

After SF, I think Kelly is the next biggest threat to thwarting my dynasty hopes for Seattle. Too soon? Nope, I'm a process guy. Kelly's process is gorgeous. If you knew what to look for, Wilson was always going to be a star. Same with Chip.

He ran a gimmick offense in college with an exposed defense. He must adapt to succeed. We don't know if that's possible just yet.

If its a gimmick shouldn't you be able to stop it after you've seen it for 5 years? Imo, Chip Kelly is the best coach that any of my teams (Seahawks, Blazers, Ducks) have ever had, including Carroll and Holmgren.

You can be a gimmick and still be incredibly good at what you do. Chip Kelly recruited players purely for speed then built a system that exploited college level athletes. That's a gimmick- but who cares- because he was a genius at enacting it.

I kind of view RG3 the same way. He (and his Baylor offense) similarly exploited college level athletes, running an offense that was brainless and theoretically easy to stop but simply required NFL level talent to keep up with- which most college teams don't have. Now Kaepernick is doing it in SF, (as is Mariota at Oregon).

Maybe Kelly, RG3, and Kaepernick will hit a wall at some point, but it won't be until the NFL finds a way to get even more athletic than it already is. And that may never happen. Seattle is already there, but building a defense like Seattle's is really hard to do and there just aren't enough pure athletes right now for more than a few teams to pull it off. That's why we saw an unprecedented emphasis on athleticism during the 2013 draft. Quite a few players went WAY higher than they should have based on their tape.

I think Carroll is the best coach of the group you described. He had recruiting advantages in Southern California, and it's true that he's more old fashioned compared to Kelly who is more cutting edge. But his USC teams were dominant and without weaknesses. Now he's building quite possibly the best roster in the history of the NFL. I'd put him on the same tier as guys like Bill Walsh, and it won't be so daring to say that when Seattle has 2-4 rings a decade from now.

I think Kelly is going to be a great NFL coach, but we need to see how much of what he does translates first. I think his read option scheme will make the jump just fine, even most NFL teams struggle with it right now. What I am a little more cautious about is his talent evaluation, turning 3 star recruits into star players (based on athleticism exploitation) is a bit different than turning 5th round picks into all-pros. Maybe he'll do both, but I am still in wait and see mode in that respect.

  • I think RG3 and the redskins proved what the future holds for teams wanting to run the read option in the NFL.Pain and suffering.
Every team in the NFL with a real chance on getting to the Superbowl has to have a healthy QB come playoff time.
Our hopes will live and die with Wilson staying healthy.
Its a great weapon but I would be happy never seeing Wilson run it again.Or blocking
As far as the sanctions go its pretty minor.Thats the funniest gif ever. How fitting.
