Seahawks top picks

A couple of days ago I posted overall top picks vs better picks since 1999. I decided to do a similar post using Seahawks top picks vs better picks. In years where there were 2 #1 picks, I listed both. In years with no #1, I listed the highest pick made that year. Since 1999 they have had 18 picks that fall under these guidelines. They have hit on 39% of these picks. Since JS/PC took over they have hit on 60%.

As much as I wanted Carimi in that draft, his subsequent career tells me we were better off not taking him. He lost his starting job in Chicago, was moved to guard, then traded to Tampa for a sixth round pick. He then lost his starting job for the Bucs after two games.

We've really struggled to hit big when we've picked late (20+) in the 1st over those years. Hopefully we hit a little bigger with this year's late pick.

In 2005 I wanted G Logan Mankins from Fresno State instead of Spencer. He was an immediate improvement at RG and with the botched Hutch deal at seasons end would have easily moved to LG. I remember how pissed that pick made me especially when I heard how Ruskell dismissed any player who was not a 4 year starter at a BCS school. I knew then he didn't have a clue about drafting football players.

Funny how a few players "we should've drafted" are now Seahawks. The biggest one for me is Clay Mathews. If Pete and John were in charge that year, they would've picked somebody 100x better than Aaron Curry.

For Christine Michael you could put, don't trade down and take Eddie Lacy.

Gage Carimi is atrocious...if anything that year showed if you need a certain position, don't blindly draft it. That late 1st OL class epitomizes teams forcing picks based on need. Carpenter, Sherrod, Carimi, etc. I think it also highlighted the myth of "OL is a safe draft pick."

I'm all for drafting OL in R1 if it's a clear upgrade. I'm not spending premium draft capital on a marginal upgrade at a non-premium position.
