Time for a look at the last power conference and their non-conference schedules, the "mighty" SEC. They are yet another 14-team conference that uses an 8-game conference schedule, something that the SEC recently announced won't be changed any time soon.

Alabama: West Virginia*, Florida Atlantic, Southern Miss, Western Carolina
Arkansas: Nicholls State, @ Texas Tech, Northern Illinois, UAB
Auburn: San Jose State, @ Kansas State, Louisiana Tech, Samford
Florida: Idaho, Eastern Michigan, Eastern Kentucky, @ Florida State
Georgia: Clemson, Troy, Charlston Southern, Georgia Tech
Kentucky: Tennessee-Martin, Ohio, Louisiana-Monroe, @ Louisville
LSU: Wisconsin*, Sam Houston, Louisiana-Monroe, New Mexico State
Mississippi State: Southern Miss, UAB, @ South Alabama, Tennessee-Martin
Missouri: South Dakota State, @ Toledo, UCF, Indiana
Ole Miss: Boise State*, Louisiana-Lafayette, Memphis, Presbyterian
South Carolina: East Carolina, Furman, South Alabama, @ Clemson
Tennessee: Utah State, Arkansas State, @ Oklahoma, Chattanooga
Texas A&M: Lamar, Rice, @ SMU, Louisiana-Monroe
Vanderbilt: Temple, Massachusetts, Charlston Southern, Old Dominion
* denotes game played at a neutral site

I can't pick a "hardest" schedule here because, top to bottom, the SEC has the softest non-conference schedules in FBS. Every single team plays an FCS opponent, nobody has more than one away or neutral-site game, and six teams never leave their home state. Their percentage of games played away from their home stadiums, 21.4% (12/56), is by far the lowest of the five power conferences. Everyone else is 30% or higher.
