Star Wars - The Old Republic - NDA Lifted!

For all of our NFL Fantasy and gaming enthusiasts. RATING: PG
  • I don't know if I want this game... I only played during the Pre-Release Access and I think that' enough.

I didn't register my activation code so I think I'm just going to sell it online.

  • Yeah, it's not doing it for me either, really.

I don't think the story is going to keep me playing, although it's certainly nice and extremely well done. But nothing else makes me want to play, and quest grinding is one of my least favorite activities.

I didn't even think about selling it, so I'll finish my month. But it doesn't feel like a living world (universe). It just feels like a multi-player RPG with mediocre combat (not by MMO standards, it's perfectly decent. But for a RPG, meh, nothing exciting). I was hoping it would keep my interest for longer, but oh well.

  • Roll a smuggler, I'm loving the story that goes with that class. The early stage culminates with getting your ship back finally and I about did cartwheels.

    I'm frankly loving this game.

  • I totally understand the feeling you guys are going through. It certainly doesnt feel much like an MMO. Being in a guild has helped to a degree but it still feels like a single player RPG. As far as classes go, my favorites so far have been Bounty Hunter and Sith Inquisitor.

  • I think that if Kyle and I were committed to playing this game together we could stick it out... But a can barely spare an hour to play out Madden match up that been over due for a week.

I think if you're with a good online community it could be more fun but grinding is dumb to me.

  • I think swtor will have an odd history when all is said and done. The project truly was one of the most ambitious games I've ever seen, and imo, they pulled it off. The game is awesome.

But, it doesn't have lasting appeal. Leveling seems easy and end game content seems lacking. I was a big early wow player back in the day and it had a very different, lasting, addictive feel that swtor lacks.

So, while the game is amazing and a blast to play, and even has good replayability, I think it will flop sooner than later due to limited lasting appeal.

I think my Tapatalk is infected...

I think it's too early to say one way or the other. Remember how much WoW didn't have at launch? Dire Maul was patched in later, but it did come with Molten Core and Onyxia. Blackwing Lair was added 8 months after launch.

SWTOR launched with Eternity vault which, granted, only has five bosses; but there is also Kragga's Palace, which only has one boss right now; but several more are being added later this month. Having hard mode and nightmare mode available right away is cool.

The game has been out for a couple of weeks, I think it's a bit premature to be making definitive statements about long-term end game playability, personally.

Valid point, but a few points of my own.

1.) WoW didn't have to compete with, well... WoW. Much different market, gamers had a lot less choice and not many free MMOs, so you stuck with one. Also, was it so easy to reach endgame in WoW at release? I joined several months after release, so I'm not sure.

2.) You're both right and wrong about end-game playability. I agree, way too early. Buuuut, that's how it will be judged. RIFT, admittedly a game with very little endgame (at release, loads now), showed that you have to justify the customer's money within a couple months of release, at the latest. If those customers are reaching endgame in a week or two, you need to have a lot of endgame content by that time. From what it sounds like, Bioware is going to be racing against the clock.

  • Roland, you didn't by chance use the exp exploits to race to 50 did you? Reason I ask is, as quickly as I am grinding, I don't see any way of getting to 50 in a week, let alone 3 days. Not since PVP zones have been filling up and space stopped giving repeated EXP.

  • I didn't exploit; granted, if I did, I certainly wouldn't publicly admit it. I did not, however. I leveled with three other people, and the game doesn't really penalize you for grouping; i.e., the mob XP isn't nerfed very much at all. So, you kill stuff way faster and take only a mild XP hit. You can probably level twice as fast in a group as you can solo, or close to it. Obviously we skipped cutscenes for everything except class quests starting after chapter 1. We didn't hit 50 in 3 days, though. World first wasn't even that fast. (It was right about 4 days, I think; ours were like 4-and-a-half.)

IIRC, almost every level starting at 16 and going to 50 has at least one green space combat daily, though. What levels don't?

@Snohomie: It was pretty easy to hit 60 in vanilla WoW. This was before it was popular to "race" to max level in an MMORPG, though; and the concept of "world first boss kills" was basically non-existent, so the "firsts" at that time weren't worth much. World first Ragnaros kill in Molten Core (final boss) was April 25th, 2005 by Ascent on the Medivh server.

  • If two of the people in our party didn't ignore their alarms & phones and sleep for like 8 hours instead of the 4 we had planned on, we might have been world first 50s. After they slept in when we first went to sleep, (which was about 42-43 hours after release, we stayed up nearly two days from the 4am PST launch) we slowed down a bit because we knew world first was out of reach from their slacking, lol.

  • So, since we had discussion about the amount of end game content in SWTOR, it looks like a lot of stuff is on the way. Their first content patch (1.1) is coming next Tuesday, and it's rather minor; but it does have a new flashpoint, and it does add four bosses to the Karagga's Palace operation. There's a pretty amusing trailer for the new flashpoint, presented in a horror format which I find amusing:

    http://www.gametrailers.com/video/rise- ... ars/725676

As for the future stuff, there is a second content update coming in March and it will bring a TON of stuff based on what James Ohlen said here: http://torwars.com/2012/01/12/rps-inter ... -included/

    Here's the relevant portion:
James Ohlen wrote:We then have a second update coming in March, and that’s going to be a much bigger update, another flashpoint – part two of Rise of the Rakghouls – and we’re going to have a whole new planet, with a brand new operation and warzone. We’re going to have the second part of the Legacy system, which is the real meat of it. We’re going to have guild banks, PVP ranking systems, and a lot of smaller additions and bug fixes. And we’re already working on the third update. The story’s already written out and being recorded for the fourth, fifth… and I can’t say how many updates we have, but we have a lot. Just to give you an idea of how far we’re planning ahead, we’ve already got voiceover being recorded for content you won’t see for a year or more. We’re really making sure we deliver new content. We also want to make sure that the Star Wars galaxy feels alive, so we’re working on an event system, which we’ll be giving more details about in the new future.”

Sounds pretty damn good to me. How long did it take WoW to add a new battleground? First expansion? Lol.

  • So I've done alot of research into this game, and I think I'm gonna get it. It does look like being a WoW player in the past, will help.
Every gameplay video I've seen, just adds more to my interest. It does have that feel, like everyone says, of being WoW with lightsabers
and lasers, but to me that's a solid improvement over WoW lol.

P.S. and Roland if you're rolling anything but a smuggler/gunslinger I'll be very dissappointed in you. lol

I was sad that the Gunslinger advanced class was Republic only. *cries to himself*

  • Yeah, I wanted to roll Empire myself, but the only classes that thrilled me more than their Republic counterpart were the Bountry Hunter/Merc and Operative/Sniper, the latter of which is what I just might roll depending on what the coin I flip lands on.

    heads: Gunslinger
    tails: Sniper

They are mirrors of each other, but the dual wield and look of the gunslinger is more intriging I think lol

  • I've been playing an IA. I'll admit Tatooine suckkkked. Now that I'm on Alderaan it's a little better, got bored for a minute but it's getting better. Cover is grating for sure, a little buggy sometimes and just annoying in that your toolbar changes upon cover activation so you basically have to remember two toolbars.
After I hit 50 on this char(lvl33 now) I will def play a rep toon. The side quests should be totally different right? Plus I have a special toon planned for my legacy name...hehe

  • Lol. Yeah, it's retarded that you can only add names when they're online. Also, Smokey, you hit upon a pet peeve of mine...

WHY DON'T PEOPLE LOOK THROUGH THE PREFERENCES/OPTIONS OF VIDEO GAMES WHEN THEY INSTALL THEM?

There is an option in SWTOR right in the preferences to disable the cover bar. Use it. Lol. (The fact that every 30 seconds for the first couple weeks, someone was asking how to do something that was plainly visible in the preferences didn't help, I'm sure; but seriously, the first thing you should do any time you install ANY game is go through the prefs and check stuff out.)

    /end rant

P.S., Your legacy name carries over to the Republic side so you must switch servers if you want a different legacy name on the same account for your Republic alt.

  • How many characters have you played, Ro? I just finally hit 50 with my Sith Inquisitor after leaving my old Jedi Knight at 45 because, well, because I suck and I got stuck and gave up. I've started a Jedi Consular and a Smuggler now, both around level 6, but I don't know if I want to keep going with either, they just don't seem to do it for me. The Sith Inquisitor story was the best by far, IMO.

  • I was hardcore playing it for a while with a couple of real-life friends in the first few months following release, then we all cancelled for a while, then resumed and hardcored it up again for a couple of months and then slowed down, which is where we're at right now. I've got a level 50 of every advanced class on the Empire side, and a 50 Sage on the Republic side...lol. So, 9 50s, total.

Best story on Empire side is dark side Bounty Hunter. If you haven't played one, you need to. It's freakin' amazing. You're such a bad-ass, it's not even funny. Well, it's actually hysterical many times, but you know what I mean.

  • Hell yeah. I was thinking about going Bounty Hunter next anyway. It literally takes me months to get to 50 haha. You gonna pick up the expansion?

  • Yeah, I already pre-ordered the expansion. Not sure how much I'll be playing when it comes out, but regardless, I want to see what they've done with it

  • Started playing this now that theres a free to play option (the subscription fee was silly expensive before). I've spent $$ on cartel coins for preferred status, so EA/Bioware/Lucas/Disney still get some cheddar out of me though. It's the first time i nerded it up enough to play an mmo, but this is an amazing game thus far.

Keep an eye out for a Lv. 14 jedi sentinel named Canhawk of the Leigonofboom family tree. Currently hanging out on the Harbinger server, somewhere on Courscant.

  • PvP from 10-49 is normalized, meaning it bumps everyone up to level 49 "average" gear, basically. So, at least you don't have a gear disadvantage.

Most of my characters are Empire side, but lately I've been leveling Republic alts; since those are the only ones I have left to get to 50.

No, I mean I want to figure out how to play this dang game a little better so I don't die by getting beat about the head while looking for the button that works the medpacks. ;)

  • Here are some pro tips for each of the warzones:

Huttball - The majority of the team should always be near the ball carrier. Always. Doesn't matter whether the ball carrier is an enemy or a teammate; either you're protecting the ball carrier, or trying to kill him. If you can get teamwork going, it's good to have one or two people in the enemy area up on the walkways so the ball carrier can pass the ball up to them, or intervene them (friendly charge) if they're a Guardian, or get pulled if there's a Sage up there. There are different strategies for pre-made groups of people that are all on voice chat working together, etc.; so the stuff I'm listing is for PUGs, or pick-up groups. Also, when it looks like your team's about to cap, SOMEBODY should be heading to the middle to try and pick the ball up again. (Stunning someone just before the ball's about to spawn if an enemy is there waiting for it also is something you need to do.)

Alderaan - Before the match starts, try to get people to either split to the sides (4 to snow, 4 to grass) or get 6 to go middle, and 2 to go either snow or grass. I prefer the 4-4 strategy. You can run between them underneath middle to defend both, and it's uncommon to see the enemy team send more than 2, and very rare to see them send more than 3, to either side; so 4 grass and 4 snow almost always results in two being captured. The enemy gets middle easily, but doesn't have time to run and stop you from capping either side, typically. Then it's just providing support back and forth between the two as quickly as possible to hold them. Remember, for the two side nodes, you can fly directly down to them after dying when you control them. (Extra speeder bikes show up on the far let and right sides in the spawn area when you control them.)

Voidstar - This one is the most gear-dependent, which is annoying. It's best to generally have EVERYONE rush one side or the other. The other team always has to have at least one person watching the other side, so if you can convince everyone at the start to either go right or left, you can usually overwhelm and get the bomb planted, eventually. Otherwise what you can do also, is have a stealth go to the other side to try and plant the bomb. Scoundrels work really well for this, because they have amazing CC capabilities. This warzone almost always results in the side with the better gear winning, though; or assuming equal gear on both sides, whichever side has a couple of healers that are healing.

What can also work is if you grab 1 or 2 people to run with you if almost all of you are on one side, so what you do is wait until the door opens for the enemy and they all drop down on the side with a ton of people, then try to "escape" with a couple people and kill the one person defending on the other side, and plant it. This tends to work well, too; but you can't just run willy-nilly and do it when you feel like it, it only works if at least 7 people are on one side, forcing everyone that just came out from the enemy spawn area to drop down on your side; so you watch for the door to open, and the instant they jump down, you leave.

Ancient Hypergate - What constitutes best strategy here varies, depending on how well-geared your team is compared to the enemy team. Assuming you have approximately equal gear, or you have better gear, you should just get your pylon each time and have 1-2 people defend it, with the rest staying in the middle and retrieving orbs and bringing them back to your base. Killing enemy players gives points, so if you can control the middle and keep killing them, you'll win by a large margin. If you're outgeared and the enemy controls the middle or they're just killing you way more than you're killing them, then your only hope of winning is to try and steal their node just before the timer hits zero.

If you have a stealth, they can try doing it solo if there's only ONE person defending the enemy node. Otherwise, go there with 2-4 teammates and try to kill or distract everyone enough for you to get the node. It takes 6 or 8 seconds to cap it, I forget which, and you have to have it capped by the time it hits zero; so starting to cap it with 5 seconds left results in nothing. You need to give yourself some time. Typically, you'd start heading to the enemy side if you're at the pylon on your side with 80-90 seconds remaining. You're going to want to run through one of the side tunnels to do this, not the middle, because if half the enemy team sees you and comes to defend, you're screwed. even if you outgear them and can kill them, it's easy to just last long enough to stop you from getting theirs. A clever team that is considerably under-geared can still win this warzone if they can capture both pylons for one of the rounds, since it not only gives you extra points for that round, but it prevents those points from going to the enemy.

Denova (Novare Coast) - For this one, the biggest point that people don't understand is that it doesn't matter what nodes you control, as long as you get two of them. Every single time you play this one, you will see a ton of people that think the "key" is to control the middle. (South.) This is BS. As long as you control two of the three nodes, you're getting points and the enemy is getting nothing. What I normally do is let all the sheeple run to south, but I go with a friend (I rarely PvP alone, I'm typically with one friend.) to the close node where you exit from the north entrance of your base, we cap that, then immediately run to the other node at the north end. (It's a triangle; NW, NE, and S; and which side you're on will vary.) A lot of the time, you can end up getting the two northern nodes while most everyone else is fighting at south.

Typically, the other team will have only one person going to their non-south node, or they'll send two but then one goes to assist south as soon as they cap it, so by the time you arrive it's one person there anyways. Then, assuming you capped the two northern ones, you BEG for support at both of them in ops chat and ask people to stop going to south. People ignore it half the time, so good luck. Another strategy here if you can't keep the nodes you get is to ping pong between them. If you see a large force coming to one of the ones you control, and there's not enough defense with you to hold it and kill them, then just run into them and die, and try to get a couple of people with you to go to the one they currently control. Who cares if they get one of yours, when you can go kill the one or two people at the one they control (south, in this case) and take it? All that matters is is you control two. I've won plenty of games without ever holding the same two nodes for more than a couple of minutes at most, because me and a couple people keep going wherever their large force just came FROM.

However, being level 14, you only have a few abilities and you'll be quasi-worthless because of it. Once you're in your 30s, you'll have a lot more utility and use from talents and trained abilities you've gotten along the way.

  • I honestly don't know, Jester. This game's not based around being able to buy your way to the top, though. You can mostly do it, but the cost would be ridiculously immense. Also, blow me; I hate botters. :)

This game's worthy to play just for the leveling experience. That's a first in the MMORPG world.
