  • First of all, a lot has been made about the new “fourth pillar” of story telling. Is it really all they are making it out to be? In my personal opinion, yes, it really is a big deal and let me tell you why. In the short time I’ve been playing SW:TOR I have already given more thought to my character than I ever did in all the years I played WOW. I’ve had to make hard choices with my Bounty Hunter that have made me honestly think about who he is and what he’s like. At first I intended to play him as a real asshole but some of the moral quagmires these quests put you in just aren’t that black and white. Do I do what gets me the most credits? Do I stay loyal to the person who gave me the job even it means hurting Innocent people? As a result of all this I have a character that is a hard ass bounty hunter who has a soft spot for people in trouble and children. The only thing I could tell you about my WOW character Dudefella is that he was a mage and a hell of a good dancer.

Of course all MMO’s now are going to have you taking quests but I think the big difference here is that I tend to care more about these quests. I will admit I am not a quest reader when I play an MMO. I click and click until it’s accepted and then read the breakdown on my way out to wherever the wolf bladders are. Playing a class in SW:TOR is like playing a single player Bioware game. People are talking to you and you’re deciding how to respond and making dialog choices. Turning the quests into an interactive experience makes me care a lot more about them. A quest is still a chance to get XP, money and loot but it’s also an opportunity to advance your character towards the dark or light side based on your decisions. In most MMO’s taking quests is what you do so that you can go play. In SW:TOR, taking quests is playing.

A nice little mini-oped about SW:TOR from "Gabe" @ Penny Arcade.

Between this and BF3 I'm not going to need any other games for quite some time.

  • My buddy in Portland got a beta invite.... what a fuck! I signed up for beta like 2 yrs ago and still have yet to get mine. I had the opportunity to go to his place and roll a Bounty Hunter and play for about 3 hrs. Man what a great game so far. He has a badass rig so all settings maxed, beautiful stuff. The install is 30 gigs, and there are over 200 hrs of dialog alone. The immersion into the game is incredible, you end up giving a shit about what you do and how you do it.

Bioware is master at the story, and it is present in this game. I can't wait to play. From what I hear the developers are taking a note from Blizzard and making the game look great but still able to be played on lower end systems which is what tends to kill many MMO's is performance issues. Who knows how well the servers will perform once they ramp up beta but I believe the devs have the money to do what needs to be done to make this game a great experience. Count me in for a .net guild if you guys want to throw something like that together.

Also, I've got a weekend beta invite for this weekend. Can't wait to get home Friday night and play with almost no sleep through Monday night. ;)

  • I actually went ahead and bought it. Turns out I had some Best Buy reward zone certificates laying around about to expire and that knocked the price down to $85. And I don't think they were sold out. At least not through best buy anyway since my order went through with no problems. Nice on the beta invite btw. Let me know how it goes.

I signed up for beta seems like ages ago. 2 years I think. I've been in the process of rebuilding my comp and will probably have it finished in time for the game to come out although I could run it now if I had to. Just got my Radeon 6950 2gb pci card in today. Can't wait to put it in.

  • Just got done with my second weekend beta invite; all the first-timers were re-invited to the second one because the first had a number of game-breaking issues.

Damn, this game is freaking amazing. Wish I could share details on here, but I can't. All I'll say is pre-order it now, and we're more likely to win 16 Super Bowls in a row than you are to regret making that pre-order. Just sayin'.

  • The NDA you agree to when you accept the beta invitation in your email is DRACONIAN. Absolutely brutal. Look at it wrong and they'll steal your firstborn - section three, article two. ;) Why do you think there is like, no leaked info anywhere on the web? They banned one guy because he logged into his beta account from work, and from home, lol.

  • Do they track your username, email and all alternate handles? Sounds pretty hardcore.

Had two friends play over the weekend but they said they were having connection issues on Friday when everyone was trying to log on. One of them also d/l'ed the wrong beta client and had to start all over.

  • There is no way to download the wrong beta client unless someone from the previous beta weekend shared their download link with you which is a forbidden NDA violation, or you clicked the link to download it in the original email, which the new one specifically said not to do. They also stated flat-out that this was a completely new build and that you must uninstall the prior one if you were in the first weekend beta, and download the new one. This isn't the shack/PWR, so I won't denigrate your friend that downloaded the old client here, but...yeah. ;) Tell him to RTFM, haha.

Nobody knows for sure what they track, but it's obviously a LOT. They do not want the general public knowing anything they don't specifically release.

Also...they are really holding back on taking good screenshots. 99% of the screenshots on the www.swtor.com official site are mundane compared to what they could take in the game, right now. They're clearly holding back to release better stuff closer to launch, or just holding back period to let there be more surprises for purchasers of the game; don't know.

  • Good news to those that haven't gotten into beta, yet. You will.

    http://www.swtor.com/news/news-article/20111111-0

^ Confirmation that anyone who signed up for beta access before today will get into one before the game launches. Sweetness.

@Smokey: I really like Hutta, the starter planet for Imperial Agents and Bounty Hunters. It's better than Korriban, IMO. Granted, they didn't have much artistic license with Korriban; they had to follow the lore and it's pretty detailed in books and such.

Make sure you guys level to 16-17, high enough to get your ships.

  • Disable shadows, turn off windowed mode, make sure exclusive full screen mode is on, tweak other graphics settings. They have optimized it quite a bit this build, it plays decently. Shadows make a retarded difference, though.

  • unplug your computer from your router after you click play at the launcher. plug it back in after the blank server screen loads. Should fix your problem.

Six, do I know ya? Longview huh?

  • so my computer goes up in smoke saturday night. literally the PSU shorted and zapped the MB.

So I go out and build a new computer yesterday to attempt a login and sure as shit, servers are down.

Not once did I get to play anything resembling a game... it was a lot more like watching a picture slide show at .7 fps or less. took the entire weekend to manage level 10.

I just gotta say, I wanna slap the shit outa most of the "regular beta testers." The superiority complex is astounding, considering they were completely randomly invited...

  • Lol, ouch. Galen - unfortunately, much of the human race is full of jerk-offs, but I think it was amplified because the regular testers had to wait in multi-hour queues to get on because of the weekenders.

You will, however, get to play again in a week or two; whenever the final test weekend is. They've already confirmed everyone who has ever signed up for beta testing prior to 11/11/11 will get into it, regardless of whether you've been in one before or not. I know that doesn't help for the weekend that just passed, but it's better than nothing.

  • Oh, it bothers me not. I have done more MMO alpha and beta testing than most people, so its their turns I guess. It is only the superiority complex that pisses me off. You can understand how someone saying "can't wait till you weekenders are finally gone so I can get back to doin my thing" spewed by dozens of teenagers all weekend was annoying. And you can't tell me that a good 3rd of the beta group is under 18. Nowhere did they require any sort of age verification. It amazes me the NDA has held strong this far.

  • They've made a lot of effort to not let stuff slide. I agree, regardless, however - it is an impressive feat, the lack of leaks. They've made examples out of people on the private beta forums, though. Like I said, one guy even got a permanent ban from it for logging in from work and home, lol. There's a fantastic cracked.com article that points out that it's really only fear of reprisal that keeps most of us from being raging dickheads:

Sounds like the absurdly strict threats worked for BioWare. :)

(That really is a great article, by the way; read it, IMO.)

  • Thanks to prior commitments, i was only able to play for a half hour. I rolled up a Sith Inquisitor.

However, I already registered for the next Beta weekend event.

  • There was a website that was offering free beta keys if you registered.

I forget the name of the website. If I can find it, I'll post the website here.

  • ahh, just make sure you don't do that if you've already participated in a weekend beta.. it could cause an error and prevent you from participating... as per their sticky on the beta forums./
