Why? What for? Where’s the upside? When does it end? Will it end?
Late Thursday night, after the Seahawks defeated the Niners in San Francisco, NBC, in a feckless, corn-fed stab at resuscitating John Madden’s holiday hijinks, set a Thanksgiving table feast at midfield to salute the game’s stars, in this case Seattle QB Russell Wilson and DB Richard Sherman.
NBC sideliner Michele Tafoya, with no track record for pursuing cheap TV tricks, sat between them and pursued a cheap, even pathetic line of questioning.
To Wilson, known as both a sportsman and gentleman, she said, “Listen, you are a gracious guy, but right now you’re sitting on the 49ers’ logo and you’re eating turkey as a Madden Player of the Game. How does that feel?”
That insipid question immediately raised three others: 1) Why would NBC have placed that table on the Niners’ logo as opposed to, say, a few feet away? 2) Why would Tafoya, under any circumstances, invite Wilson to be less than gracious? 3) Why was she encouraging Wilson to speak ill about a team he’d just helped defeat?
Wilson didn’t buy in. He didn’t even bother to answer such a question. Instead, he said, “I’m just blessed to be out there with these guys.” Then it was Sherman’s turn. Surely, this celebrated trash-talker and braggart would, er, cooperate. “All right,” Tafoya said, “Russell didn’t bite. You’re sitting on the 49ers’ logo.” Yeah, come on, Richard, bash the Niners! Give it to us! Say something crazy!
But Sherman, too, seemed to find her angle both obvious and lame. He even cited Thanksgiving as a day to be thankful — as opposed to boastful — and spoke of his team having played well.
