Bennett and Avril have cemented this defense as a top tier Defensive Line. Clemons and Bryant were great for the last 4 years. We seamlessly transitioned to slightly younger and more versatile players for similar prices.

2012 Clemons at 31 (now 33) signed 3y $22M $7.3M APY he also had up to $4M in possible bonuses
2012 Bryant at 27yo (now 29) singed 5y $35M $7M APY

2014 Avail at 28yo signed 4y $28.5M $7.1M APY
2014 Bennett at 29yo signs 4y $28.5M $7.1M APY

We actually seem to save ourselves money, make a slight upgrade, and add more versatility as Bennett can play both DT and DE very well.

Bryant was not as good of an interior player as Bennett is.

Avail and Clemons are a wash except with Clemons ACL he lost some speed.

I would take this seasons Clemons over this season Avril hands down.

I timed Clemons with my stopwatch and compared him to 2012 and he actually gained speed :O

Very interesting. You should have a second post with a statistical comparison. Sacks, hurries, etc.

I was surprised to see Avril resigned already. Comparing stats from Clem and Big Red while on the worst team in the NFL to players on the best team in the NFL is apples to oranges. I would take Clemons over Avril any day. I hope Clem and Red can work something out and retire as Seahawks.

Sometimes we put too much stock in athleticism. Pete did too, with Harvin.

But look up Avril's 10 yard combine split. It is mind blowing.

I love Clemons, but you guys are crazy if you want Clemons now over Avril. We could compare last years stats too. We could re-watch super bowl and watch Avril blow up play after play (Clemons had a good super bowl too)

Avril just has more in the tank right now.

I want to clone Clemons and bring him back as a 22 year old

I was a bit of a worry wort with the Avril signing, and thought in Detroit he was weak against the run, and a product of an incredible interior DT group.

He wasn't. Avril is a fast ass baller.

I don't think that had anything to do with Clemons himself

It did. Clem was a 240 pounder until he got to the Hawks. He took it personally how little he played after going to PHI. He got there as an 8 sack player coming from Oakland expecting PT and didn't get that many reps. He had something to prove when he got to Seattle and everything finally came together after putting on about 15 pounds of muscle and turning into a complete, every down weakside DE.

It's moot, IMO. Irvin is playing better, over the last half dozen games, than any Leo or SLB I've seen in a Hawks uni since Chad Brown (Brown played a similar position, albeit neither). Julian Peterson nor Clem had the cover skills that Irvin has. Irvin has been a no weakness player going back about 6 games now. Overall....Irvin is just killing it right now.

All I know is Chris Clemons will turn 34 years old next season, while Cliff Avril is in the prime of his career. I'm grateful for what Clemons contributed to the team and thankful for what Avril continues to contribute.
