He's not a particularly fluid or impressive athlete but not many 6,5 guys are. I very much doubt he'll ever be a starter on our offense either, but he looks smart enough to stick around. He obviously offers some mismatch ability and red zone presence plus you have to love a guy making the most of his opportunities (who can also catch the ball well).
What I liked about him most in the Super Bowl was his 45 yard catch, it was a really smart play. Firstly he created instant separation by using his length to take a huge stride, he's pretty much past the corner in a couple of strides before the guy can even turn round. Matthews isn't the quickest so once he gets up to top speed he does a nice job of boxing the corner out and 'owning the redline', this was evident on his first big catch too, and even though he didn't get any separation, he left room for Russ to put the ball on the outside where only he could make a play.
Matthews was owning the redline in his snaps, which is a big thing for the Seahawks. It doesn't necessarily take a big guy to do it, Golden wasn't bad, but it makes sense for us to utilize Matthews in this manner. He's not going to master a route tree, but if we're getting the right looks then he can be a guy to cause some matchup nightmares a few times a game. Like he did on Sunday.
Playing special teams is huge as well. Kevin Norwood's got a big 6 months ahead of him, I'm not sure his place on the 53 is safe next year. I'm assuming we'll be bringing in at least another two receivers in the draft/fa.
