After being phenomenal against play action in 2013, we regressed in that area more than any other team in the league, per Football Outsiders. We allowed a mediocre seven yards per play action play vs. 5.3 yards per non-play action play.

After losing Mebane, Bryant, McDonald, Clemons, etc., it's possible we were selling out to stop the run a little more than we had been in 2013. Injuries to Chancellor and Wagner probably did not help the situation. The good news is, in spite of those absences, we allowed just 81.5 rushing yards per game, which is a franchise record. Not to mention we led the league in scoring defense for a 3rd consecutive season.

How many teams did we play that actually used it though in comparison to 2013?

That's a good question. I can't tell you the exact answer without going through each of our opponents in 2013 and 2014 and tracking their individual play action plays against us.

But I can tell you, based on Football Outsider's overall breakdown, that the total percentage of play action the defense faced in each year was nearly identical. In 2013, 23% of the plays against our defense was play action. In 2014, it was 22%.

Here was Football Outsider's analysis of the 2013 play action defense:

We were unbelievable good against play action (5.3 yards per play) in 2013, which was a testament to not only the instincts, vision, and discipline of our defense, but also the trust that they had in our front four to shut down the run. No one that year was really comparable, and few defenses in league history have ever been comparable in that regard.

We also regressed as a play action offense, going from 8.9 yards per play action (4th) to just 7.6 yards (15th). Jimmy Graham should help open up opportunities in the play action offense. As a defense, I doubt we approach the level of dominance we saw in 2013, but hopefully we become a little more disciplined than we were last season. Having Mebane back improves our ability to own the line of scrimmage and maybe that will have some effect against play action.

The only areas where Seattle was surprisingly bad last year was Punt Returns and Kickoff Returns.
