Sounds like one of those cases where a team was trying to bring him to their active roster, so Seahawks had to make a decision to promote him or lose him.

Your post implies that Seattle knew in advance another team was going to sign Smith to their active roster so Seattle preempted that move and signed him to their active roster... correct?

Certainly, Seattle doesn't get notified by the other team and then has the option to sign him to their roster.

If so, I've never heard of it going down that way.

I've been under the impression that the other team contacts the player with a contract offer and if he accepts, the team get notified that they just lost a player from their practice squad.

Maybe Lockett injury keeps him out this week. Smith looked well returning kicks

It is conceivable that Smith approached the Seahawks and told them that he has received an offer from another team. As a result, in order to keep him, they made the decision to promote him to the active roster.

Makes sense... thanks.

I guess if we are going to refuse to use Mathews hen there is little point in keeping him around.

Maybe they felt they gave Matthews a chance and he just wasn't the right fit and it was time to part ways

In answer to the question is the team notified of an attempt to sign away a Ps player?

Ans: Yes, if the PS player wants to stay with t he team that had him on their PS.

I think Smith may be an upgrade over Matthews.

Anyway, Bevell was not able to figure out how to ever incorporate Matthews into the Hawks O.

I'm relieved by this move. I think teams are prone to chase unique players in search of difference makers only to become more predictable. Too often they become prone to telegraphing intentions via the comings and goings of less versatile specialists.

My impression is that Kevin Smith is much more versatile and well rounded. His coming and going is less likely to telegraph offensive play calls. His presence is also a boast for special teams.

The departuress of Mathews and Michael has opened spots for better rounded competitors. Those are needed developments. I think the 2015 season will evolve thru the emergence of a better balance of player skills and player development. And in the case of those who don't become better rounded ..... roster churn is a valid option.

I'm looking forward to the debut of Kevin Smith.

Smith certainly showed good effort in the preseason, and some nice chemistry with...well, R.J. Archer. But it can't hurt.
