If he's playing a hybrid nickel/safety role on base downs then there won't necessarily be a SLB at all.

I really think this thought is just matchup based though. If we're facing a team that is more run heavy then we'll have an actual SLB there, I'm sure. I would also think that this will be down and distance type of stuff too.

I wouldn't try to pour too much .NET cement on anything regarding this.

Seattle has generally avoided having specialist DBs in the past so this news is a pleasant surprise for me. Good call by Scotte, he predicted Browner would be a TE matchup guy.

If this holds true I like the Browner signing a lot more. Browner's size and speed compares pretty well to Kam.

I wonder if this means Seattle is getting back to the "big nickle" 3 safety defense like the one they had in 2010 and 2011. Given the current personnel, it would make a lot of sense.

If the other team has a good move tight end, we will see more Browner. If not, less.

I like the idea.

He'll likely only line up there when there's a TE to cover in the slot, which is becoming more prevalent in the league. It's an answer to the Gronkowski, Eifert and Olsen types, each of whom has brutalized us in the past. You have to call BB a "safety" or "linebacker" as well because those TEs can move around, so the guy defending him has to be flexible enough to play multiple roles.

Already on record as being glad that BB is back in the house.

Really happy to hear that Pete wants to use him to the best of his abilities and not just force him into a single role.

This was my first thought when BB was signed. This could be a great move for him.

Same here. He diagnoses well, but he's losing his quickness. Backing him off the line will help.

I also thought this move had something to do with our weakness vs. TE's last year. That became a big deal and teams had no problem going to that right away to exploit us. The fact that we knew it was coming and still could rarely stop it was obviously troubling enough that they made a roster move.

I love the idea of implementing a veteran player's abilities into a new concept. Intuitive and advanced thinking by Pete as well.

Isn't it just how NE used him?

To my limited understanding I believe Browner would be taking the SAM spot as a Safety? I could be wrong though, 0/10 troll attempt.

This is a perfect role for him. Doesn't have to worry about speed killing him on the outside so less need for penalties which was his achilles heel.

This is Pete thinking ahead of he curve a bit - using this level of specialization for a previous corner to become a tight end specialist. Not many teams have a nickel TE cornerback but it is a natural evolution of the defense. Many teams were exploiting nickel corners who had to cover split TEs so a very intersting move by Pete.

This sounds like a brilliant plan! So this would mean a lot more 2 linebacker sets correct? That would make sense since we have a big drop off with whoever would replace Bruce this year.

So with us carrying a role player DB, does that mean we are going to carry an extra DB?
Or does Browner knock one of the developmental guys off the roster?

With the Hawks' success with DBs I don't think we would get away with playing the up/down/up/down game with the Practice Squad. All it takes is one team to decide that our cast-offs are better than theirs.

Gase will give us a good peek into how this works out. He's clever enough to test Browner against blockers.

We may see some outside runs on 3rd & 4-6.
