Good read, showing some concern, but imagine if we hadn't drafted 3 RBs.

Carroll said a concern now is overworking Michael and Collins, who work with the first- and second-team offenses in that order,

“We have to manage this really well,” Carroll said. “Christine Michael is doing a great job. We have to be careful not overworking him. He’s just been on the money throughout.

Carroll said Collins is getting a crash course (somewhat literally) in the NFL.

“He’s getting banged around pretty good,” Carroll said. “He’s very tough, he’s really responded. The defense has come to the offense to really work with the football, make sure those guys are really secure so they’re getting banged around a lot, which we intended to do that. He’s taken to the physical stuff and he’s dishing it back out, so I’m really proud of the way he’s handling. He’s had a lot of work already.”

Carroll said for now, the team will have to make do with the running backs its has and use Michael and Collins and the guys who are healthy in the base-down running game as well as the third-down offense.

In 2006, USC had 9 RBs (4 true freshman) and 6 FBs (1 true freshman) on the roster. Everyone said Pete was crazy for having so many, especially for bringing in 5 true freshman for the backfield in one class. Then they started dropping like flies and it turned out we were darned lucky we had so many guys.

Absolutely. In the NFL when you don't have an established RB on your roster, and you can't spend money to bring in one. Then you better draft a ton of backs. They drafted 3 backs, and were criticized for it by some, but it was the smart, and logical move.
