It's such BS, I get so tired of reading from other fans around the league that we stole the 12th man . I am sure most of you already know it but the 12th man goes all the way back to 1900. I was really hoping we would drop it and just be the 12's.

So my question is.... why do we need a deal for 12s or 12? If we're not Using "The 12th Man" then whats all of this for why a deal for something that ISN'T "The 12th Man" ? And at what point does it become extortion?

Are they going to start paying Seattle to no use it? Because a 5 year deal to simply NOT use it, it pathetic.

Idk but each time I hear about it, Texas A&M my opinion and outlook of the college gets lower and lower

Also funny that we arent even the only team paying A&M for the right to use 12th man, and I think the Colts are still being sued by them.

So the Hawks are paying 7-8x per year for even more limited use in this new deal.

I'm guessing they realized that if actually sued again their various "12" trademarks wouldn't hold up.

Edit: JPatera76 -- it's like the "Golden Arcs" of the fast food burger restaurant "McDowell's" in Trading Places. Marketing and branding your fans as "12s" or the like to get around the "12th man" trademark is referred to as "trademark dilution" and is a violation of trademark law.

In your own link it says that the exact term "12th man" was first recorded in use for what would become Texas A&M back in the early 1920s, and that A&M had been using it continuously since then. That the idea of fans being a twelfth player predates that in a couple sources is really neither here nor there when it comes to trademark law.

Agreed that it's a silly thing to give Hawks fans crap about, though.

That said, TBH about it I think "that's really the best you can do?" is a MUCH better rejoinder than insisting that A&M doesn't have a right to the trademark or that the Seahawks don't pay for its usage.

It's Paul's money to spend as he likes but Texas A&M has bubkus to stand on given the term originated around a generation before that university existed.

Lol, it's getting serious when we are citing trademark laws.

The 12th man or some variant has been around as long as football, but A&M will continue to use this to feed their program, as disgraceful as it is. In a league like college football, where you have programs that have millions and millions at their disposal for recruiting, facilities, etc vs other schools, you can't hardly blame them. Competition that is the NCAA is essentially bought and paid for at the root of it and this is one of A&M's ways of injecting capital into their program. Parity doesn't exist where they're at.

I can't stand it, but I get it.

Yes I too am not clear on why we agreed to a 5 year deal with Texas A&M if we no longer us the "12th Man" designation now...It's been EXCLUSIVELY replaced with just "12" or "12's" at least for the past year or more...Doesn't that get us off the hook for any of these petty BS legalities?

In soccer every fanbase (mostly loud home crowds though) are referred to as being the 12th man on the field. It's really not an innovative enough idea to trademark it.

If you bothered to actually read the article you would see it refers to "merchandise" and printing the phrase "the 12th man" not using it in conversations, and broadcasting ... Just sayin

The movie was Coming to America not Trading Places. Fun fact the Duke brothers were in both movies
