I was sure hoping he would be a stud, after reading what his college coach had to say about him. He was the best db on a national championship team according to urban meyer. But, didn't call it. Can't take credit for it, haha.

Seahawks are as loaded at safety as I can remember. Two All-Pros and potential future HoFers in Thomas and Chancellor backed up by the following:

An all-around stud in McCray; a dime specialist in Browner; and a cerebral, breakout rookie in Powell. That's already five safeties when we usually keep only four. And Shead (CB/S) is a 6th.

That leaves Terrell (a speedster who made the 53-man roster last year), Lambert (another cerebral and promising prospect), and even McEvoy on the outside looking in.

Perhaps they will teach Powell the dime role over time and release Browner.

Exactly what I was thinking, we are absolutely LOADED at DB. I can almost assure you that Arizona will pick up whatever we leave unprotected because they are hurting at DB. After Honey-Badger and PP they have nothing. We need to find a way to keep them out of their hands.

First off, reports from camp are that Browner is taking to safety extremely well. Name another 6'4" safety that can run, cover and play ST like Browner can. You don't rid of people with unique physical skill sets like that.

And keeping safeties out of Arizona's hands is easy. You call up Bradley, and tell him you're releasing two guys and Arizona will claim them quickly so he needs to give you a couple seventh round picks for them. You are doing him a solid and he is keeping them away from your rivals

Bradley has been busy fortifying the Jag's D and already has a lot of talent, but I am sure the FO is way ahead of us on this one.

BTW, do you think Bellichick was intentionally sticking it to us when he traded Chandler Jones to Arizona?

I have to think there is more than meets the eye with the chandler trade. I know bellydick likes to do shocking things, but to trade one of the premier pass rushers in the league for an offensive lineman who has been labeled a bust? Seems like one of those situations that ol' bellydick may know something the rest of us don't know. For example, maybe Jones is a douchebag and a locker room distraction. Don't know, this is purely conjecture.

I can't find the thread but whoever called it...nice call.

It was me. I took so much flak for it though that I deleted its, so that's why you can't find it.

Believe that?

I love 'ya, Pete, and I really liked what I saw out of Powell, but this is coach-speak.

Russell Wilson to Braylon Edwards?

Tyler Lockett scorching the Broncos for a return TD and almost another?

Frank Clark's domination out of the gate last year?

Powell had a big day, and I really hope he makes the roster, but there have been some positively scintillating first games by rookies in the recent past.

Big fan of DeShawn Shead. So this is good news to my ears.

[tweet]https://twitter.com/gbellseattle/status/765292292122877952[/tweet]

Powell, who is listed as a strong safety on the Seahawks roster, continued to move around the Seahawks defense on Monday, seeing snaps at both safety and cornerback. Afterward, Carroll said that he believed Powell could make a full-time living outside, but that the team would continue to play him at different spots throughout the secondary, following the blueprint they used with another former undrafted player in DeShawn Shead.

Shead is now a de facto starter in Seattle's secondary after first making an impression on special teams, then using his versatility to become the team's top reserve at several positions in the secondary.

"(Powell is) going to be going back and forth," Carroll said. "We're going to try to do the same format we did with DeShawn and see what happens. that makes him more valuable to us, makes a spot on the roster more available and with what he did on special teams, that's the right idea. I think we stay with that."

I didnt know anything about him in the offseason, but Sammy, his friend and I were impressed by him in TC and I think Sammy and I both wrote about him in Day1, Day 2 and Day 3 accounts of it. Sammy's friend was really hyping him on the the way over and I admit I was sort of rolling my eyes, but watching him you knew immediately he fit.

I had him pegged as an early/mid day 3 pick. Was really surprised he was available as a UDFA. Had him as one of 5 UDFA guys likely to make this years' squad (Perkins, Overton, Powell, Elliott and Boykin).

Still early. But that game echoed what we've been hearing/seeing all TC from coaches and from fan reports. Powell has exhibited a quality consistently. To see it manifest in a game is encouraging.

Edit: I think it's worth sitting back at the preseason quarter pole and acknowledging what an amazing class this group is shaping up to be. I don't see a ton of marquee kinds of players. But there could be as many as 12 players that make the active 53. For a very bad team that's an amazing haul. For a team whose roster is easily in the top 4 in terms of quality that's unheard of.

This was a team bleeding depth players and this class really has filled a ton of holes.

Was a little nervous that our initial success with drafting players in the Pete regimewas due to his knowledge of them as a college coach. Exciting to hear that we may have another top notch draft/FA class on our hands. Nice post!

I just got through watching the game tape again in its entirety ... and I have to concur with your guys' assessment. I was extremely impressed with Tyvis Powell -- not only for the obvious interception that he had, but for his overall play (no matter if it was at Safety, Corner, or on Special Teams) in that game. Though he had his foot on the goal line, that was a fantastic special teams play that he made in getting to that punt and scooping it back out of the end zone and into the field of play. Fantastic athletic play there. I thought he also looked good in there at CB as well. All you have to do is go back and watch the tape -- Powell stood out throughout the game seemingly no matter where they put him.

I know this, Pete LOVES guys who tilt the field ... who have great athleticism, size, speed, overall instincts -- and just flat out make plays. This guy makes plays. I get sort of a "Big Play Babs" kind of feeling about this guy. I don't think there is any chance that the Hawks could sneak him onto the practice squad, as he would get snatched up immediately by another team were he to be cut. If Powell keeps up this kind of play, it's going to be very hard to keep him OFF of the field -- to say nothing of the final roster.

The fact that the coaching staff gave him a lot of playing time ... trying him out at different positions in that game says to me that they may be thinking the exact same thing. With his versatility and overall football smarts, he's certainly looking like an excellent dime candidate to me.

I didn't see a whole lot from Brandon Browner in this game. If I were Browner, I'd be looking over my shoulder.
