Sounds corny huh? There was a lot of talk on the board prior to the season opener about the lack of a true SAM on the roster but many of us thought that, given Frank Clark's new svelte figure, that not only would he be occupying Irvin's previous role as an additional rusher, but also that we would be in nickel a good portion of the time.

"Frank Clark is going to really help us," Carroll said. "We think Frank is going to be a premier rusher. He showed that last year. And so losing Bruce as an outside guy on the right side really opens up the opportunity for Frank to step up and do some good things for us." 4

We talked about the new trending 425 and the "Big Nickel" recently, and while we are employing a more traditional nickel set, it could easily transform into the big nickel with Shead's size and hybrid capabilities. Following another trend in the NFL, we are going to be seeing us in nickel 70%+ of the time. This may not always be true w/strong running teams like the Rams, but I believe we will see it a lot.

Nearly two-thirds of all snaps were played in the nickel defense last season, so it's about time we start referring to sets with five defensive backs as the base NFL defense. The rise of slot cornerbacks and hybrid safety/linebacker types has coincided with the proliferation of spread offense concepts throughout the NFL. Offenses are turning to more one-back sets, more three-wide sets, and more shotgun with each passing season, and defenses have predictably responded by putting additional coverage players on the field. 1

What I am most excited about this season is the personnel we have in the nickel, both Shead and Lane lit it up last week, nobody is throwing Sherm's way, Bam-Bam is back to his old punishing self, and ET will be back to his all-pro persona. I can't think of a better 5-DB nickel in the entire NFL. This year has the potential to really add to the Legion of Boom's legendary status.

From the Field Gulls review of the game (after ET comment) link:

The rest of the secondary looked phenomenal. Seriously. Richard Sherman locked it down, per usual, giving up one reception that went for two yards before he dropped the wideout in epic fashion. Kam Chancellor looked like an impact player and was dropping fools left and right, including a key 4th down stop. I was most impressed, though, by the two guys competing with each other for the cornerback spot opposite Sherman. Jeremy Lane and DeShawn Shead looked so much better than I ever could’ve hoped. 3

Edit: new name was a dumb idea.

We breed great DBs around here. That's just what we do, and we are possibly the best in all football history at doing so.

I think we just stick with the Legion of Boom, still fast and physical, I forgot who said it but one of the guys had said the Legion of Boom extends to the whole DB group
