Not sure how he came available, but he's great on special teams and his Pro Day at Auburn was impressive. Reggie Mackenzie and John Schneider worked together in Green Bay, so they were probably fighting over him :p

"03/13/2012 - Under-the-radar Pro Day workouts that opened eyes: Despite a weak class of safeties this year and the fact that Neiko Thorpe started 40 games (27 at CB from 2009-10 and 13 at free safety) against SEC competition, he wasn't invited to the Combine.

As such, he took full advantage of the opportunity to work out in front of scouts, recording numbers that ranked among the elite of all defensive backs tested at the Combine this year.

Thorpe was clocked at 4.40 seconds in the 40-yard dash and 4.01 seconds in the short-shuttle. He also posted a 38" vertical jump and a 11' 5" broad jump. - Rob Rang, NFLDraftScout.com"

Last March, Oakland put a 2nd round tender on him. But they must have cut him.

http://www.ibabuzz.com/oaklandraiders/2 ... nd-tender/

"In the Oakland Raiders’ second week of training camp, corner Neiko Thorpe took a reduced salary. The Oakland Raiders gave Neiko Thorpe a second-round tender just a few months ago. His base salary was $2.553 million, but Thorpe agreed to a base salary of up to $1 million with a $675,000 base salary.

Nonetheless, Thorpe will find himself as the next man up via an injury to either David Amerson, Sean Smith, D.J. Hayden or T.J. Carrie.

Therefore, it is important that Oakland retains him on a team friendly deal. Good teams need solid players like Thorpe waiting in the wings. The six-foot-two corner fits the mold of the Raiders’ defensive scheme."

So, Thorpe was cut by the Raiders on final cut day. the Seahawks immediately signed him and released Tharold Simon.

He's a good ST player, but it looks like he played a lot for the Raiders. His contract made him expendable.

Oh well, a win win for us and the Raiders.

Not immediately. He was claimed on waivers by the Colts and released a couple days later. We signed him a week after the Colts released him.

Sometimes it is about fit. Some players work better on some team better than others. We didn't need him to come in and be a A+ starter. We can give time for development. Hope he works out.

I love having him on the field.

He kills it on ST, which was a big deal against a really good ST unit in Philly. And...he might start opposite Sherm (well, he'll be wide when we go Nickel and Lane will move inside).

Dude can ball.

Sometimes it has more to do with the team/staff. We happen to have the proper staff to teach the big fast corners plus the team mates (such as Sherman) that are willing as well as able to help teach. The other part of the formula is the player in question being willing and able to learn what they are being taught.

We have all seen how involved Sherm and the rest of our secondary are even when they are not on the field or playing.

Outstanding gunner. Had a big opportunity last week but got dinged. May get another opportunity this week. It would be nice to get another cheap starting corner.

Both he and DeAndre Elliot have been very good when given a chance. Excited to see those two young players develop.
