I doubt there will be any interior pressure from the d line

This whole season. Just like last one, everyone keeps hoping its going to happen i just dont see it. And its very simple why, they dont have the personell to do so. Its largely the same guys as last year with rubin and reed. They are run stuffers and wont get any pressure.

Malik was supposed to be that guy that blows up the middle, and we all know what he did. He basically screwed up the entire plan is the truth. Now they have to scour the depth and look for a guy to do that but they just dont have anyone on the roster.

Malik basically threw a monkey wrench into the entire D line

Not just basing it off of that. Just look at the personel and its evident. You think rubin and reed are going to magically be able to collapse the pocket when thats not what they specialize in? Not gonna happen, there is no one to do that just like last season. And thats why it will be an issue. We can all thank malik for his ATV crash, he was supposed to be a difference maker.

Definitely an issue last year, and I'll need to see what we get out of guys like Coe, Rubin, Reed, Bass and Jefferson before agreeing that it'll be more of the same this year.

If 2-3 of these guys don't take the jump and step up? Then yes, it'll continue to be an issue, can't have Bennett taking 80-90% of the snaps all year again cause no one else is healthy or effective.

We have several new DL that could change that. Naz Jones displayed some good push last week and Jefferson is supposed to also help. Interior pressure is a fickle thing. Look at Jordan Hill and Clinton Mcdonald. Mcdonald had 0 sacks his 1st 2 year on the team and then in 2013 he had 6. Hill had a good 2014 with 5.5 sacks and has 1.5 in his other 3 seasons. It's entirely possible someone has that kind of a breakout year this year too.

Nazair Jones and Quinton Jefferson are two guys that we did not have last year that are earmarked for the same role as McDowell. On top of that Reed is in year two which is typically a huge leap for lineman (year 1 to year 2) and has by all accounts put a ton of work in through the offseason to be more than just a run-stuffer. I highly doubt Pete and John put all their eggs into the Malik McDowell basket. That's just not what they do when the team has a hole or weakness ever.

We have never had a great interior pass rush and look how awful our defense has been.
Would it be ideal to get better at? Of course. But losing McDowell (who has never played a snap) is going to ruin our defense? Don't think so. Maybe Naz Jones is better than McDowell ever would be. Let's hope for the players we do have to step up.

We had one of the best interior rushes in the NFL in 2012-2013 when we had Mebane, McDonald, Hill, Bennett, McDaniel, Big Red, etc.

It's all about fresh bodies all being effective. Back then Bennett was barely in on half the snaps because those other guys were so effective, now he and Avril are playing too many snaps to be effective all game, and all year.

Gotta get back to a deep rotation.

Great point - I should have said interior pass rusher. Depth is huge as you said.

Sheldon Richardson trade might still happen.

Hoping!

Richardson's cap hit is 8M this year, right now our cap space is roughly 4M.

So unless we do some fo serious big contract cutting before the season starts to clear that much cap space, it ain't happening.

Holy Moly!

What a negative premise for a thread after just 1 preseason game!

We don't know whether this supposed lack of interior DLine pressure is remotely the case until the #1 D starts playing against #1 O's.

There are a few players that have been added and while the absence of McDowell is disappointing but the play of Jefferson, Bass, Harris, Milhouse or Liggins has still to be assessed. Taking an immediate negative view is silly when there is still a lot of preseason left and time to see if the rush is in fact present but as yet not seen.

Finally as mentioned above if this remains a weakness the team could well acquire a player with a trade to assist.

After one pre season game it looks like the Offense is going to score 40+. We don't even need a defense.

+1.
Who knows if Malik would have even panned out for sure. We have other options that "could" provide that spark. I like the fact that Jones gets his hands up and cause issues. That can mess with the QB's head and cause more picks also.

All we gotta do is play against the Charger's 3rd and 4th stringers all year, and we're in business.

I get over 9M, but we won't know more until the final cut comes.

I was referring to True Cap Space, which takes into account money that needs to be set aside all throughout the season for injury signings, etc.

According to Hawk Blogger in this article, realistically we have more around the 3.5-4.5M in real cap space.

Also from the Jets standpoint, who are obviously in tank mode, why would they dump Richardson and his 8M hit, only to absorb the 8M back in two mediocre players in Kearse and Lane.

Makes no sense. If they're gonna dump Richardson, it'll be for picks.

Because they want somebody to destroy the Patriots is my hope. 8)
