.... Equals SURE THING against Kris Richard's rendition of Seattle defense. 31 points used to be more than enough to put teams away at home.

Field position, penalties, and 3rd downs. Atlanta had only 279 total yards.

We gave up 9/14 3rd down conversions. Several were 3rd and longs. Over and over we see this pattern. We put all that cash and draft asset into our D and it's biting us in the ass every week now.

Yep, they just cannot get off the field. It’s so frustrating to watch. And in the rare instances where they DO make a 3rd down stop, you KNOW that flag is gonna come flying out more often than not. If this team doesn’t win the division, it’s going to be due to the defense and penalties more than anything else.

Yards don't win games. Ryan had a vintage RW3 from 2012-2014 stat line. Efficient passing and going 2/3 in the RZ trumps throwing for a billion yards and going 2/6.

Ryan, who has the record for most consecutive 200+ yard games in NFL history, deserves a ton of credit. He has been a tough guy for us to beat.

It also shows that a lot of the issues we had were self inflicted. 100+ yards in penalties. Two ugly turnovers that spotted them 14 points. Losing Griffin was costly.

That said, the defense did get the team the ball back at the end of the game with a chance to win or tie. We just couldn't get it done last night.

What does Ryan throwing for under 200 yards have to do with our poor 3rd down efficiency rating on D?

Did they get those 1st downs by running the ball? Or was it because the pass defense struggled?

The only thing HN2017's post derails is the argument that our pass defense is bad. On 3rd down, maybe.

Yeah, 3rd down defense is a valid criticism over the last two years. Seahawks are currently 13th in opponent 3rd downs converted (38.5%), so definitely room for improvement.

Nothing seemed to work on 3rd downs. Even when they tried blitzing, Ryan would kill them with screens. The one that made me the most mad was when Ryan scrambled for a first down. Something got majorly botched with our containment on that play. Garvin seemed out of place a few times, and they used more base defense to compensate for the loss of Chancellor. I'm not sure what the solution will be, actually.

It was so painful to watch.

I remember Bennett getting clear penetration through the middle at least 2/3 times, homing in on Ryan who was backpeddling about 15 yards further behind the LoS then he would just dump off to someone in the flats and they would get massive YAC.

Coaches always say the margin between a win and a loss is very small. Well in this case the margin was huge yet they were in it till the very end.

Russ's gifts; 14+ point spread.
Defense inability to get off the field on third down.
Penalties extending their drives and killing Hawk drives.
Poor clock management.
A budding running game that was throttled by another untimely injury.

With all that the Hawks were still there to the end. Another team likely would have lost by 30.

Passing yard totals has zero to do with passing efficiency on 3rd down.

You have a point, but I didn't want a create an entirely new thread to discuss Ryan's 200+ yard passing record.

Most 3rd downs are passing plays. On the whole, the defense didn't allow many passing yards or total yards. Ryan just played a tight game and made the necessary plays to keep the chains moving. A couple more stops on 3rd downs and the game might have a different result.

Getting Griffin back to pair with Maxwell will be huge. Getting Maxwell more reps to prepare to start will also be important this week. 49ers provide a warm up for the major test coming up against Philadelphia. They have to be better on third downs (and securing turnovers!) to have any chance to win that game.
