  • Unspectacular, savvy tight end. Worthwhile player and very well-rounded. These are the guys that allow the superstars to flourish by doing their job.

2 catches per game don't free us from the need for 9 touchdowns in an eight-game stretch.

Playing a contract year does that, that and he is on the field more then the other two, Vannett was blocking a lot as well, that seemed to really help the run game but good blocks don't show up in stats like TD's.

How long did it take this tree to grow in our offense is the reason why, he is playing for 15 Million a year right now.

This. Will the Hawks want to wait for Russ to develop a report with another RZ target?

He's 31 and not used to his full potential here. He's worth the money...for other teams. I'd rather the money went to Sheldon Richardson or Frank Clark.

Graham has nothing to do with the play calling. When called upon, IMO he's delivered. I don't understand why so many want to get rid of him. Especially when Bevell is finally realizing how to use him.

First, he makes 10 a year. Willson is also a FA after this year and a weak draft class in 2018...

Going into the offseason with only Vannett and swoopes is not ideal. He's looked better the last month, but I don't see a #1 TE in Vannett, we shall see.

Yep, and TE money has been driven down. One blog I was reading somewhere estimates around 7 mil a year. I don't think Paul will be back, unfortunately. Some team is going to offer him a Maxwell like contract.

  • For the money, I'd rather re-up Sheldon R., P-Rich, and Luke Willson over the expense of Jimmy G. That is not a slight towards Jimmy who is an elite pass catching TE, just an age and expense thing. Roll into next season with Luke and Nick at TE and really, Sheldon is the key signing for next year. He continually gobbles up two opposing O-line to free up B. Wagz to be the DPOY that he is. If you think about it, Sheldon's impact to the D is far greater than Jimmy G to the O, and again, no disrespect towards Jimmy intended, I'm speaking strictly from a "chess piece" valuation - factoring in age, impact, need, etc

    Wrong question to ask.

Question to ask is, do you really want to omit double-digit touchdowns from this offense next year just to "punish" our coaching staff and front office for not utilizing him better?

I doubt $7 mil per gets it done, but you never know.

A 35 year old witten signed for 4 years at $7.4 per. The top tier hasn't risen, but the mid tier guys make $6-7 a year now (sims, j. thomas, v. mcdonald, doyle, fiedorowicz, gresham, fleener, d. allen). None of those guys are in the same league as graham, IMO.

The TE free agent market (or lack there of) will also drive up the price. The top FA TEs available will be graham, brate, ASJ & an oft injured Eifert who has never played a full season and missed 41 games in 5 years.

Who knows if he will be priced out for the hawks, but this would be a much different season without him right now.

  • It wouldn't surprise me if JG seeks more money elsewhere, but I've often wondered...Was Jimmy thinking of getting one more ring before retiring? Maybe if we go all the way this year, he'll hang them up.

IAE, while I'd like to have JG hang around, I'm not super scared about moving forward with Willson/Vannett/rookie-FA. :229031_shrug:

Graham makes 10M now but I agree. Lets also remember the drops and the half hearted blocking and route running early in the year. Pete had a sit down chat with him and Graham has been money ever since. A player making that kind of $$ should not require that level of intervention to do their job.

Thanks for the TD's but bye Jimmy.

  • I was a big proponent for drafting Vannett. Thought he looked great in the Senior Bowl and was excited that we drafted him. That being said, I think he's largely been a disappointment. In college I saw him block well and run slick routes with good hands. Until yesterday I haven't seen him do that at the pro level.

I was really psyched to see his play yesterday, and he displayed all of the talents that I saw him display at Ohio State. He ran good routes, displayed good hands, and blocked well, including a beautiful escort of Mike Davis on a sweep play.

Lots of potential here. Hope he is able to keep it up!

He had some more half-hearted blocking attempts last night. I'm torn. I love the redzone productivity, and he makes some great catches. But his blocking is poor and he can get the dropsies. I honestly don't think he's worth the money, but it's a tough decision with the way he is producing right now.

I also followed him at Ohio State and if settles into a 600-700 yard, 4-6 TD contributor with good blocking that'll be just dandy. Also being an under the radar kind of threat now also is good.

  • Speaking of that first play, I think Seattle should open every game with some sort of designed run for Wilson. I think it functions like an early adrenaline soak for the perpetually amped Wilson.

Not to mention what it does to the defense.

  • If Vannett gets to Zach Miller level, I would probably have to stick with him over Jimmy.

  • He lines up as a WR a lot and like last time is going to push for WR money again. 10 million now go for 15 next, he may not get it but I would think he would start there.

And that is our dilemma when judging whether Graham is worth a new contract. Same boat as Kam Chancellor and, one could argue, Jermaine Kearse and Jeremy Lane.

They are, or were, "8.5 out of 10" players (at least on this team). Unfortunately, you can't pay them like 8.5 players, because they'll walk to someone who will offer them "10 out of 10" money. And we can't risk that because 8.5 production is not something we can just plug in. So we wind up overpaying players because they're too good to easily be replaced, but not quite good enough to merit those enormous contracts.

For me, I pay Jimmy and keep developing Vannett. Jimmy's current performance isn't a "contract year" anomaly. He was 3rd in the league in receptions last year (at his position). If others are really so annoyed at Bevell for taking so long to unleash him in the red zone that they would rather see him walk, that's their choice. But if you take a cold, objective look at the tape, neither Luke Willson nor Nick Vannett have given anyone reason to think they can match Jimmy's talent level, and they certainly won't once they're doubled by defenses as the team's #1 TE.

If Seattle wants to let 1 touchdown per game walk, they'd better have a McDougald-style under-the-radar free agent signing in the works, or a high draft target, at that position. And given we lack a 2nd- or 3rd-round pick next year, the margin is unusually narrow.

This game against the Eagles is what I call a "tipping point game". John Schneider's sleep patterns may be disturbed for the next few months.
