I don’t know why, but it “felt” like the Seahawks were always killed on TOP in games this year due to bad first halves and too many three and outs. Obviously, if your defense is on the field a disproportionate amount of time, they get gassed and are unable to perform near the end of games. I’d expect a winning team to almost always have a advantage (however slight) in TOP throughout a year.

When I did the math, it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. In 16 games the total TOP stat was as follows:

Seahawks 469:11
Opponents 490:49

A total difference of 21:38

The average was:
Seahawks: 29:19
Opponents: 30:40

The defense was on the field a total of just 21:38 more all year. I don’t know. I thought the discrepancy was going to be greater.
Some games were awful (like week 1 @ GB and week 15 vs. LAR)
We actually won the TOP in 6 of our 16 games.
We lost the TOP battle in our last 7 games. (Read that again and remember this is a team that finishes strong historically).

Anyway, just some food for thought as we reflect on the season.

I beat if you looked at 2013 and 14 are offense was on the field for 50 more minutes. That's a big swing and just a guess on my part.

Thanks for taking the time to work that out!

I’m in full agreement, thought it would be MUCH worse.

That 21.38 deficit in TOP averages out to about 1.33/game. Take away the awful 1st game and the roughly 2 to 1 deficit and it's not actually bad. I kind of watched it all year after that 1st game and it was usually pretty even.

I actually looked this up a few weeks ago when talking to someone else. It doesn't fit the nay sayers narrative so its not brought up like it used to be.

Also, I'd be interested to see a time to throw side by side. I think that might he interesting as well.

thats what no running game will do, folks

Seahawks need a new O-line coach and a new O-line.

Thanks driver! These stats are great to see. Our run game was amazing in 2014. Lots of OT games in 2013.

I've posted this stat many times over the past two years. TOP is negligible. It was near the same in 2012, 2015 and 2016 as well.

I think the "gassed" thing is a myth. IMO it is because the D has to take care of 80 to 90% of the field on many occasions. In short, they are not allowed mistakes, errors, first downs because so much of the time opposing offenses only have to go half the field to get points.

For example, we stop an offense at their 40 then they punt to our 10 or 20 then our offense goes 3 and out. Next Ryan kicks a dud or they return it to the 50 or to our 40. In that example the offense basically gave the other team excellent field position simply because they couldn't get at least 1 or 2 first downs. Happened so many times this year. Even with all that the D has come through for us on numerous occasions.

STs was no friend to our D as well, in all aspects.

Drive extending defensive penalties play a big hand as well. Hell, I think they had three on Sunday alone.

What is it by halves?
I'll bet it's a pretty big difference and that's why the defense was gassed, from being out there most of the 1st half.

Hmmm. Good points. I do, however, believe there were some outlier games were the TOP indeed did have the D gassed. Week 1 @ GB and the infamous rams game are two that come to mind.

Also, losing your last six TOP battles to end the season is mind boggling. These includes various games at home with an O-Line that had the first 2/3 of the season to develop some continuity. With the offensive firepower this team has, the only way we lost 6 consecutive TOP battles is with with poor play calling or horrendous execution.
