  • Never had a problem with Kris. Given all our injuries, the fact that we fell to merely "decent" in our defensive stats isn't bad.

Impartial about KR getting fired, he's certainly not as good as Gus or Dan Quinn. Maybe finding someone fiery like Dan Quinn from college would be a nice change.

  • Well, regardless what they do, plenty of people will be mad about it, so there is that :)
All kidding aside, I have no problem with them changing DC as well. Plenty of blown coverages and defense crapping the bed this season. People wanted massive changes, looks like that will happen. Good.

Actually, it makes perfect sense. Pete takes over at DC, and Cable at OC.

We all knew Cable must've had something incriminating on Pete to last this long, now he is just making his move and clearing out the competition for the HC job once Pete retires, which may be sooner rather than later in this scenario. :stirthepot:

Bradley resigned with the Chargers yesterday.

    http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/2201 ... s-chargers

I don't have a huge problem with Richard, but he doesn't seem to command the same respect and fire from his players as Bradley and Quinn did.

That's a hard thing to quantify, but from the outside that's my two cents about Richard as a leader.

They just had Softy on the phone (he's on later in the day), and house cleaning was the exact term he used. I still have not heard my top name on the list though so of course I'm nervous he in slides under the hatchet somehow.

But my common sense side would agree, they are doing a thorough house cleaning.

  • Honestly this is the move that would make me most happy of all the coaching moves. Richard has done nothing but underachieve in his time at DC. On the sidelines you can see the players tune him out, our 3rd down defense is atrocious, bad end-of-game management. He was not ready to be a DC. Great position coach, but that's it.

    Seconded...

I don't think Richard is awful but because our offense has been so bad the squeaky wheel has gotten the oil.

I think Dan was able to take Gus' defense and take it to a higher level. Richard has dealt with more injuries but we've gone only backwards. I'd also note in 2014 -- Sherman and Chancellor had injuries requiring off-season surgery, Mebane and Jordan Hill went on IR and we still found a way to get to the Super Bowl.

  • I think Kris has done well as Our defensive coach and I think the fact that he was able to reassemble a credible defense in spite of all the injuries we experienced with way too many of our key players was impressive to say the least. However if Gus is at all interested in returning to Seattle, and Kris doesn’t catch a HC spot somewhere, to see him remain with the Seahawks and possibly share a spot with Gus, I think we would see a legion of Boom Boom evolve in 2018.

    1. If you're those coordinators, especially Manuel why would you leave that young up and coming defense to come here?

    2. If you're Blank, why would you let them leave? Dude's gonna write fat checks to keep those guys.

I think people are forgetting this isn't 2013, we don't have that same energy and national swagger that we used to. So coaches and FA's aren't just going to flock here anymore.

Based on what? Gus inherited a terrible defense and made it better. We led the NFL in scoring his final year and aside from our collapse in Atlanta we were really trending upwards.

Good to know you know both Pete and Rex on a personal level and know exactly how players would react with him here.

Rex was a terrific DC. He would not be coming here to coach. Those Raven’s defenses he had were terrific he would be a great hire.

    Quinn
    Gus
    Richard

Actually he had several blown 4th quarters, and gave up early leads like he did to Atlanta. In the Redskins game right before that he gave up 14 points in the FIRST quarter to RG3, before his injury

People have a tendency to remember certain facts based on their biases. Kris Richards lost his defensive stars and still managed to keep a solid defense. Gus inherited young talent, saying he got a "Terrible defense" is the epitome of revisionism. He had young Sherm, young Earl, and young Wagz. Young stars all over that defense. Again, no one's saying Gus is bad. But this idea that Kris is terrible is extremely over the top and unfair imo. He's been solid. Could we do better?? Yes. Do I think we need a new DC? Yes. But he's capable enough to give us a defense that CAN win games

And even with his blunders, he shut down the Eagles high flying offense with Wentz, and the Cowboys. He reliably shut down the run outside of a few games. The 3rd & 10s were infuriating but outside of that I don't have much else to say. Richards also dealt with an offense that was 10000x less efficient than what Gus had

  • I see one name missing from the possible replacements list.

In the past, Pete has mentioned Michael Barrow as a future defensive coordinator. Barrow is listed as " Assistant Head Coach/Defense/Linebackers".

That's not to suggest that he is at the top of the list. But, he is an internal candidate.

  • Pete runs a 1 gap system on D period. He wants to play fast, not read & react, It will never change. So stick to coach suggestions that align with this.

Offensively. Pete wants a zone running game that you can then work the boots & rollouts off of with play passes. West Coast verbiage. Mike & Kyle Shanahan are the poster child's for what it should look like, but it hasn't unfortunately.

Pete will most likely stick with this style on offense, with only a slight chance he changes, or tweaks it a little bit.

But defensively Pete isn't changing. He learned it, and ran it since the 70's and isn't changing now.

This I feel is the problem, our expectations for our defense went out the window when the injuries hit, and rightfully so but we became easily impressed by a couple of solid showings. They still got smoked a few times in there and lets not forget when he had a full contingent of players this defense was under performing. The dline looked unable to generate pressure consistently all year, getting off the field for 3rd downs a continuing issue, penalties continued, temper flare ups continued. For the capital invested on that side of the ball, he wasn't getting the best out of his players, it's great that he made a few back ups look good but was that really something he did or did we just stumble into some good back ups. I definitely think Richard was part of the problem here
