  • Yeah, I think I said that in the other thread. This is somewhat like a Bruce Irvin signing.

  • Not a bad signing. He couldn't be walking into a better reclamation environment. Playing next to Wags and KJ, being coached up by Ken Norton and Clint Hurtt...heck, I'm optimistic. Which is a rare thing these days.

  • Long arms and runs like a gazelle. Three forced fumbles last year. 1.55 10-yard split. 21 pressures on 132 pass rushing snaps.

I like that we are not going "cheap" at this position. We haven't had a guy like this at SLB/LEO since Bruce Irvin.

  • We obviously needed a SAM LB to replace Wilhoite and Mingo looks like an upgrade. Incentive laden contract with some upside. We'll see if it works out, but this is the sort of FA signing I'm okay with.

  • This signing could work as a SLB. We have been looking for someone to fill Irvine's role since he left in FA.

When you start to look at the potential for a redesigned D, there is starting to be the makings of their plan. But the difference is that if we sign Suh ( my hope) we would be stronger in our front seven than our 2012/2013 version, which would help our secondary. That may be the plan.

Personally, I am fine if that's the plan.

  • I think the team is going to move him back to DE full time like Dion Jordan. Mingo has been miscast as a 34 OLB his whole career. I feel that the Hawks want him to play DE full time as a pass rush specialist.

  • My first feeling upon hearing of this signing was we just got Chris Clemons 2.0 . Time will tell, but I'm happy with this move , hoping we can bring in Ebron on a prove it deal as well.

  • Perhaps Jordan's relative success last season has them thinking they can take talented young molds of clay and coach em up , on the defensive side of the ball at least.

Amongst everything that went wrong last season , it was a very encouraging season of identifying and developing young defensive talent - shaq, coleman, naz, jackson, jordan, jefferson all had encouraging seasons

    This is a good point

Go back and look at 2017 draft. Ignore Malik and we got a lot of players from that draft. Carson should be back, Shaw and Naz have potential to be really really good but many others are still on the team. Hope it speaks to their strengths and not the teams weakness last year.

If Fant is good this year, Pocic developed, Brown and Britt plays well and we have a coach that can coach we can protect the QB and maybe with a decent draft class have a pretty good team with some low key but important signings like this one

  • From what I can see his cap hit for 2018 will be $2,400,000. ($1M base + $1.1M signing bonus prorated + $300K roster bonus).

That seems to be like fantastic value, I don't agree with the posters that think he will be switched to full time DE, though. He was be a situational pass rusher but not full time.

I love this signing. Fantastic pickup.

Seems lots of his incentives with be classed as NLTBE (not likely to be earned) so won't count towards the 2018 cap however if reached will be taken from 2019's funds, that's a win win for the team.

  • Mingo's explosiveness is similar to Khalil Mack's:

    Mack's 40: 4.65
    Mingo's 40: 4.58

    Mack's 10-yard split: 1.53
    Mingo's 10-yard split: 1.55

    Mack's broad jump: 128''
    Mingo's broad jump: 128''

    Mack's vertical: 40''
    Mingo's vertical: 37''

    Mack's three-cone: 7.08
    Mingo's three-cone: 6.84

    Mack's short shuttle: 4.18
    Mingo's short shuttle: 4.39

  • I agree with the above post.

Mingo is an exceptional athlete and strong in run D with some abilities as a 3-4 OLB pass rusher.

His listed 2 year deal is for $6.8 mil but with incentives it could reach $10 mil. which isn't bad. As well this signing gives the team a player who has proven he can play SOLB in the NFL and the team needed help at that position.
Until we develop a pass rush that will cause opposing teams to be forced to scheme to defend it we will never be able to consistently take the final step. The interior rush needs improvement. The OLine clearly still needs work.

Just because his physical traits match up doesn't mean he would understand the X's n O's of that position. It's a completely different technique and he'd suddenly have to play a position he's never played in the PRO's or College.

If that were the goal, I don't think we would have signed him for 2 years.

  • Getting younger.

Normally, you would think that getting younger would lead to more explosiveness, but less discipline.

One cannot argue, however, that the most penalized, albeit veteran defense in the league was disciplined...at all.

In other words, if your team is going to give up first downs with mental mistakes, you might as well have young players doing it.

  • SLB and LEO 3rd down pass rusher are two areas of the team that already look better on paper than they did last season, because of the addition of Mingo. He has the athleticism to set the edge, drop in coverage, or rush the passer.

I think the defense will have a chance to be pretty damn good again. The only glaring weakness is CB, mainly because they have not yet re-signed Byron Maxwell.

LDE Frank Clark, Malik McDowell (if cleared)
    LDT Jarran Reed, Shamar Stephen
    RDT Tom Johnson, Nazair Jones
    RDE Dion Jordan, Marcus Smith
    SLB Barkevious Mingo
    MLB Bobby Wagner
    WLB K.J. Wright
LCB Byron Maxwell (hasn't been re-signed yet)
    RCB Shaquill Griffin, Neiko Thorpe
    NCB Justin Coleman, DeAndre Elliott
    SS Bradley McDougald, Mo Alexander
    FS Earl Thomas, Tedric Thompson

LB depth seems like an area they will want to target in the draft (and undrafted free agency).

  • From ESPN:

"In an interview with 710 ESPN Seattle, Seahawks general manager John Schneider says outside linebacker Barkevious Mingo was "pretty much" the team's No. 1 priority among outside free agents. Mingo projects as Seattle's starting strong-side linebacker in base packages and an edge rusher on passing downs. Schneider said Mingo will rush the passer more than he's been asked to by his previous teams: "He's such a good athlete, people have been putting him in space and letting him run around and stuff instead of letting him put his hand on the ground as much as we're going to let him do."

This doesn't surprise me. Some time back, I talked about the impact of the loss of Kam Chancellor in how he allowed the team to not have to worry about having a real SLB because he could play both as an impact edge setter, while also going robber coverage and playing deep. He was a player that could play multiple positions where you only needed to pay for him vs paying two players to try and be as good as him at either position.

McDougald was a target in the running game in playing Kam's role when he was up in the box. Yes, McDougald had a lot of tackles in some games, but because he had a lot of opportunity. He was easy for OL, TEs, and even backs to move him. Teams repeatedly targetted him in off tackle plays. Now that we actually have a legitimate SLB, that shouldn't be as much of a problem. I still like McDougald better at FS vs SS, but some of those concerns are now negated to an extent.

Yeah, it's crazy! However, they are vacuous posts, zero substance or information, just a poorly fabricated opinion.

Belicheck letting him go means nothing. If you upset him, noi matter how much talent you have (except for Brady), then you're gone.

Recently when he signed Pat Chung back to the Patriots he admitted that when he first drafted him, that he was using him wrong. Then he saw Pat play for another team, successfully, so brought him back. So using Belicheck as a barometer of a player's success or talent is meaningless.

Mingo has physical talent, and just needs to be put in situations where he can succeed. Pete is good at this on Defense, but poor at it on Offense.

Just look at Kam Chancellor. If Kam had gone to any other team, it would have taken him longer to get on the field and get his success. The same with Byron Maxwell. Play used him to the best of his abilities, which is why BMax wanted to come back here.

When Byron was in Philly, he was asked about his new team (Chip Kelly), and said "Can I give this money back? I hate it here."

I'm excited about Mingo's physical talent, and Pete's ability to get the most out of him.

Just watch, he and Dion Jordan will play well this year and, it will be because they are given the opportunity to play fast and not have to think about what they're doing.

And THAT, imho, is the biggest reason players get drafted high, but fail to perform up to expectations in the NFL. College football is a much simpler game, with less brain, and more brawn. The NFL playbook will give the back problems, not to mention, stress headaches. "see ball, hit ball."

And as far as Sheldon goes, my guess is he played out of position sometimes, and that his value could be recouped with a 3rd round compensatory pick.
