Kickoffs....

  • Historically I know janikowski for having a strong leg, but don't know how he did last year, or if the punter we drafted did kickoffs. Seeing as Ryan has never done them (as far as I recall), I'd have to imagine it will play a role in the final kicking positions.... Anyone more familiar with the situation have any insight on this?

  • It'll almost definitely be Janikowski I'd imagine.

  • He was on IR last year. But based on his signing bonus, he is our expected kicker for this season. The other guy (Myers) will probably be a camp leg.

    Current Contract
Sebastian Janikowski signed a 1 year, $2,015,000 contract with the Seattle Seahawks, including a $600,000 signing bonus, $600,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $2,015,000. In 2018, Janikowski will earn a base salary of $1,015,000, a signing bonus of $600,000 and a roster bonus of $100,000, while carrying a cap hit of $1,715,000 and a dead cap value of $600,000.

  • These rule changes if they happen are going to change strategy on kickoffs.

The receiving team will be out numbered side to side and there will need to be guys with good hands there or there may be medium distance onside kicks.

The inability to wedge block will disadvantage the returning team. Coverage units for the kicking team will be weaker in the middle of the their units and will require strong tacklers to prevent longer returns.

The kickers accuracy will be more important an ever before.
Until we develop a pass rush that will cause opposing teams to be forced to scheme to defend it we will never be able to consistently take the final step. The interior rush needs improvement. The OLine clearly still needs work.

  • Have you seen how jacked Janikowki looks at the off-season workouts?

Both kicking and punting could actually be really exciting this year. At kicker, we get to watch the work of a sure-fire, future HoFer and dedicated professional. At punter, we may have one of the best young punting prospects that the NFL has seen in a long time.

Certainly Janikowski is slated to be our kicker, but if the new guy beats him then signing bonus doesn't enter into it. That money is already gone either way, so putting the best kicker on the field is the only factor worth considering.
