The first couple of years Carroll was here he was "forced" to play the young guys because he had no choice.

The roster turnover was extensive. Cutting and releasing aging veterans was absolutely necessary.

Carroll needs to think that same way with this upcoming season.

Earl is holding out, that's good, the guys get all the reps and can develop. You can't develop by not playing and sitting the bench. Coaches need to see what have in these young guys, the more reps these guys get the more comfortable they'll be and may be future stars.

You can't keep playing aging vets just cause it's "safe" you need to develop young talent to "takever" and become the future!

It should start with giving Frank Clark is second contract!

It isn't that simple. Earl isn't a 36 year old Lawyer Milloy. You're talking about replacing a future HOF'er that's still in his prime that has been the glue that holds this scheme together.

When Carroll replaced older guys early in his tenure it was easy because they were all easily replaceable.

"Replaceable" is subjective. To an extent "everyone" is replaceable. Even owners are replaceable.

In order to keep winning, you need more talented "young" guys than "old" guys in this game.

The longer you wait to develop the younger players, the longer it'll take for them to make an impact. Most people will say the writing is on the wall and Thomas' days in Seattle are numbered.

Better to move Earl now and develop young guys now rather than later!

It's a balance. You don't just jettison a guy like Earl in the name of youth. He's only 29 himself, and has been - outside of maybe Wagner - the most important cog in the hawk's historically good defense.

The difference of losing someone now instead of during the season is you can adjust the scheme to fit your personnel easier, we drafted Flowers to become a CB, but hey maybe he gets reps now at FS, he has the speed, we also work some of the other guys in there. We have 5 guys listed as FS not counting Flowers who was a FS in college as well. Thompson and Carter should have a hand up but we have options and we have the ability to coach up the situation now.

One last thought, I don't think they have 5 FS's if they were not hedging on a issue maybe with Earl, McDougald also sliding there from SS and Alexander and or Hill taking the SS roll or Shaquem possibly taking the SS position is not out of the question as well, he has shown a lot of aptitude and smarts and also has the speed and coverage skills.

That's just what we have on the team now, there are going to be cuts from other teams we could look at also.

Good back and look at our 2010 roster and I think you'll actually be surprised how many old veterans we brought in.

A review of new discoveries from last year is reassuring. Safety Bradley McDougald. Boundary corner Shaquill Griffin. Nickle corner Justin Coleman. Those additions account for 3 out of 5 starting spots for the defense backfield. A nice mix .... all identified and verified in a single year via free agency, draft and a trade.

All those second year competitors to be heard from. And, it is still early in this year's process.

Agreed. Sometimes we as fans get irrationally excited about young players. Just because a player is young and athletic doesn't mean his ceiling is an elite player. Many young players have ceilings of being only decent players. There's value in that, but it's unlikely these guys will turn into transcendental talents like ET.

Strong point. We need elite players. I think there's a camp that thinks that Pete brought in these guys from the scrap heap and made them great so he can do it again. It remains to be seen, but I'm skeptical. I honestly believe Sherman, Kam, KJ, et. al. are just special, special players who will be tough to replace. Add in ET was actually a top pick and he will be even more difficult to replace.

If the younger guys are better, they’ll play. Pete has never been afraid to play young guys. Even if they aren’t ready to start, he’ll try to work them in via spot duty and special teams.
