How things have changed. Hopefully Carroll and Co. can coach up this young crew.

I'm surprised we're not higher with still having to pay Kam and Earl. But I guess Bobby and KJ are the only other high salaried defensive players.

As it should be. I remember Earl Thomas bemoaning the fact last year about the offense starting off slow. But the Defense had all the money, so it was difficult for the offense to compete talent-wise.

Just a suggestion .....

The title would be more accurate if it read "Seahawks are 30th in "active" defense spending"

Seahawks are ranked 20th in defensive cap allocation. [urltargetblank]https://overthecap.com/positional-spending[/urltargetblank]

.................. but, your so right about this being a young crew.

There is a direct correlation between the teams that are ranked in the top 5 defensively compared to their spending. The top 5 spenders are also teams that are regarded as the best defenses in the league.

Interesting. Do you have a link for that?

HN2018 provided the spending information in his OP. Just seeing the teams on the list, one can surmise they are regarded as top defensive teams. Jags, Vikings, Rams, etc.

Here's the link to the spending - https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/positional/defense/
Here's the link to the 2017 top defenses - http://www.nfl.com/stats/team?seasonId=2017&seasonType=REG&Submit=Go

It shows that Jags, Vikes, and Broncos were in the top 5 in total defense in 2017. That's why I said "regarded" because stats don't tell the whole story. Rams are a highly regarded defense but the 2017 stats didn't show that.

A little off topic, but this comment made me wonder a couple things about salaries.
-Is there a cap for coaches salaries?
-what would that list look like if you added in DC salary? The entire defensive coaching staff?
My guess is that the order won't change, but it would be interesting to see if there is a correlation between def rankings and coaches salaries.

This makes more sense about the defensive cap allocation ranking. The other ranking didn't seem right to me.

Well you have a young group and bring in a few selected pieces at higher salary to fill voids, on offense you have less room once you have a QB getting Franchise pay.

I say a top 5 defense will cost you for the Vets your revolving in and out as your core grows, then it's the reverse your core costs and your bringing in cheaper guys to fill holes.

We went thru both phases now, were in rebuild mode mostly with a few hold overs on their initial contracts.

I don’t understand how that jives with this?

That was total spending in April. Also, the OP is about the defensive cap hit of the initial 53-man roster. Chancellor’s money wouldn’t be included, neither would the dead money for players like Richard Sherman, Cliff Avril, and Michael Bennett. Neither would the players who are IR’d, like Byron Maxwell.

This is about the money spent on players who are actually going to be playing. The Seahawks’ active defensive unit has one of the smallest cap hits in the NFL.

We are about to find out what Carroll and Co. can accomplish with fewer defensive resources than just about any other team they will face.

It's what happens when you replace a bunch of vets with rookies.

Thanks for the info. Based on the current rosters we don't know yet if the spending will be a direct correlation to having a top defense. I guess I jumped the gun a bit on my earlier post. I still believe that the Jags, Vikes, Broncos will be the top defenses this year but it's premature to say they are top 5 at this point. We'll have to check back as the season goes to see how it all pans out.

Seahawks defense spending may have jumped up a bit now that Earl has ended his holdout and will be on the 53 man active roster.
