Depth Chart, Roster Moves, Cap Position since the Super Bowl

The team usually makes close to 300 roster moves/season ( last year 303 ); the depth chart changes as injuries happen and/or players are added or subtracted as needed. I believe having a depth chart here is a good addition to the main board page so when the team changes players, knowing their player numbers, their names, and positional information is a good thing to be able to quickly refer to here without leaving the site. JS likes to churn the roster a bit to help the competitive situations at various positions.

Here is a current depth chart. I will record each further transaction in and out as they happen. This depth chart is just my opinion, feel free to comment or suggest changes. Comments here are welcomed, this thread is supposed to be informative but is also to encourage roster discussion. The plan is to record all forthcoming roster moves and to adjust the DC as the roster changes are made. This gives a more accurate representation of the present depth on the roster going into the offseason.

Please advise here of any changes as they happen. The usual dependable members always assist but everyone should feel completely free to report changes to the roster here when they happen, sometimes the media gets the story wrong though. The assistance is greatly appreciated and allows us to have an accurate and up to date DC here. I will attempt to keep this depth chart current quickly after all changes, PS designations, waivers, cuts, additions, players claimed, PUP or injury designations, etc.. I will also attempt to keep it current throughout the season by indicating what the roster moves were after they happen. This sometimes involves a delay, sometimes life intervenes, and the delay may result in the update being slower to happen. However, I will make every effort to keep this page current. This hopefully will be a complete record.

I will also update the presently available cap number on a weekly basis, or as quickly as information can be obtained from https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/seattle-seahawks/. Their number can be seen at the bottom of the page.

Here is the roster from Seahawks.com: http://www.seahawks.com/team/roster

Here also a DC from the team: http://www.seahawks.com/team/depth-chart It's now finally posted.

At this stage the obvious needs are:

Offence
1. - QB- back up needed, I doubt Paxton Lynch is their answer.

2. - FB- Suspect the team will not offer a tender to RFA Madden. After watching NE use a FB, the team needs to improve this position. This could be FA situation or a draft/UDFA area of acquisition.

3. - OG- This is a clear area where depth is is here but no starters and the team will likely renew one or both of their starters Sweezy and Fluker if they can be re-signed at a cap favourable rate. I see Simmons being re-signed as an automatic. This is a very critical team need.

4. - OT- young depth needed.

Defence
1. - DE- With only Rasheem Green presently being signed this is most likely the principal team need. I see the team keeping Clark even if they need to franchise him, Quinton Jefferson will be kept, Ricky Ali'fua will be kept around until the end of camp and only kept if he can show something. Don't see Dion Jordan staying unless he agrees to a very team friendly deal. Naz Jones is moving to 5 tech as he has an ability to rush This will cause a decision to be needed to see if they keep Brandon Jackson but as he is a ERFA likely he will be competing hard with Jones and Jefferson for a spot.

2. - DT- This is deep draft for quality DTs and the team is still looking for that difference making 3 tech but could also add a young and solid NT type if one is available to them. I see this DT as a key draft area of interest.

3. - WOLB- Much here will depend upon whether the team can re-sign KJ Wright which may not happen as the contract he might be able to get elsewhere will far exceed what the team is prepared to extend to him. I could see a creative signing of Michael Kendricks that works around his potential sentence for insider trading. This was well described by Chris in the "You're the GM" thread. Doubt Alexander is kept, Calitro will be signed as a ERFA to compete for a spot and the team will add depth in the draft or through the UDFA group to compete for spots on either side. Griffin could be expected to show significant improvement in terms of play recognition this season.

4. - SOLB- It is possible the cap savings of releasing Mingo will be taken as Jacob Martin was outplaying him at the end of the year and offers more in terms of situational pass rush, this may be an area where more depth is acquired through the draft or though the UDFA pool. Both Beal and Currie are somewhat unknowns though Beal was a good college pass rusher.

5. - CB - I expect the team to add depth at CB in the draft or through the UDFA pool. Coleman should be renewed, don't know about Thorpe who has missed a fair amount of time, but is a solid ST contributor. Doubt Akeem King is tendered a RFA contract but think the team will try to keep him for depth.

6. - S- Both FS and SS will have depth added as the team keeps all their FAs except Thomas who might just get franchised to be traded (sign and trade situation) dependent upon whether there is interest for him by a team who wants to bypass FA and competing for his services in FA bidding.

Special Teams

1. - PK- the team will add here. I could see the team drafting a player or through the UDFA pool, adding one in FA and having a legit competition for the job. Janikowski is gone.

2. LS- Tyler Ott will be re-signed as a ERFA, we'll see a camp body here.

Other personnel decisions are the re-signing all of almost all of the other ERFAs like WR-Moore (who had special moments at time last season) even if they are just for depth or to compete for roster spots. Think the team will try to keep JD McKissic who there is some question to me about whether he is a RFA (per Spotrac) or a ERFA (per OTC). If McK's is a ERFA he's re-upped in my mind without question otherwise he is unlikely to be tendered a RFA min. deal and will have to sign a team friendly contract to be kept. Doubt the team keeps Hundley unless his price is right or Stephen as he was being outplayed at the end of the season by Poona. The team won't be very active in FA unlike last year, and then if at all only late. They will be busy trying to sign UDFA college players though and could add a considerable group this off season as there are a few roster spots where the depth is skinny that offer legit opportunities for those guys to catch on.

The areas of critical need are not many and they are fixed in a large way by keeping our own FAs.

On Friday, five members of the Seattle Seahawks saw their contracts earn them guaranteed money heading into 2019.

The most notable is Kam Chancellor’s $5.2M, just over half of the $10M base salary he has for 2019. Chancellor will likely be cut before he receives all the rest of his money, but the $5.2M was guaranteed to him regardless – and cutting him before Friday would have been an even bigger hit to Seattle’s cap room.

Besides Chancellor, four other Seahawks saw a nice payday on Friday: left tackle Duane Brown ($1.75M) receiver Tyler Lockett ($3.907M) center Justin Britt ($2.25M) and safety Bradley McDougald ($1M).

Thanks for posting Kitsap!

To me Kam will likely be cut as a post June 1 designated cut thus spreading his remaining cap hit out over two seasons. The others are simply contracts and they could have their bonus money paid anytime.

If Kam Chancellor is released after June 1st but before or on the day of final cuts prior to the opening week, the relevant numbers, as I read it, will be as follows:
2019 Salary Cap savings of 5.3 million.
2019 Dead Cap charge of 7.7 million.
2020 Dead Cap charge of 2.5 million.
2021 no charges remaining.

.....................................................................................................................................
Calculations are as follows:
2019 Team Cash Salary Savings = 10mil scheduled base salary - 5.2 mil guarantee salary potion = 4.8 mil in non guaranteed salary savings.
2019 Total Salary Cap Savings = 4.8mil non guaranteed salary + .5mil in non realized roster bonus = 5.3 mil in salary and roster bonus savings.
2019 Dead Cap costs = 5.2mil guaranteed salary + 2.5mil in pro rated signing bonus = 7.7mil in Dead Cap charges.
2020 Dead Cap cost will be the final remaining signing bonus charge off of 2.5 mil.

Note that if Kam is released prior to June 1st, the 2019 Dead Cap charge will jump from 7.7 mil up to 10.2 mil while the 2020 charge would disappear reflecting a full charge off of the contract signing bonus in 2019.

Thanks Jville I knew there was more math but the post June 1 release offers the biggest short term benefit for the team. Sucks that the guaranteed money carries over to next season though. 3rd contracts are certainly dangerous for cap reasons.

Kam’s contract is a clear reason why the team is shying away from 3rd contracts. The team got a partial season from him of play but is stuck paying him big $ for o return follow the injury. Earl wouldn’t do what the team Drs. recommended to him and is having a repeat of his broken leg as a partial consequence, Lots of very expensive lost time to injury as players start to display an injury history makes the weaker and less competitive.

Thanks for setting up this new thread Jammerhawk! It's much easier to find our current player status now.

No worries. The good idea for this came from Jville who is invaluable as a contributor along with Kitsap guy. At the end of the league year technically the 2018 roster is still in effect until March 13, the idea is to strive for accuracy but that can be confusing and the present thread is clearer to read.

Please add you ideas about the roster here if you think there is something to discuss.

I am flabbergasted that the 2018 thread had > 33000 views. Guess something is right about keeping this thread going.

Today is the first day teams can designate franchise or transition players.

Pretty clear with those numbers the Colts and the Jets will be tough to compete with for FAs if the Hawks are even interested in competing. I doubt they are genuinely big players but will attempt to keep their own with maybe a strategic addition or two.

Colts and Jets if they go big splash will eat huge chunks of that quickly. I expect a lot of grab bag type signings before someone else does with those numbers and huge contracts unworthy of talent happening.

We seem to always wait till after the second wave happens.

I hope the team just focuses upon keeping their own and staying out of the FA market unless there is an advantageous signing to be had.

Last year I think they erred in signing a few guys who could have been around later and not cost them all their potential comp picks.

There is still $481,843 in guaranteed salary left to be paid out in 2019.
