This likely completes their shopping list. They had a lot of DTs available and they chose Meder and Woods.

Someone will need to go. Likely they'll wait until Monday when he officially signs.

Woods at 330lbs should help clog the running lanes.

Woods gives them a 9th DT so I would imagine he will take the spot of #61 Jay-Tee Tiuli or #79 Bryan Mone.

John Clayton nailed this acquisition. A lot of people were thinking Danny Shelton would or should be brought in for this role but evidently they like Woods more. I still expect 1 more Dlineman myself, a veteran 5T DE to compete opposite of Ansah.

Naw, Collier & Q Jefferson with others like Naz can play 5 tech. They need another Leo.

Don't like the sounds of this

Woods was a big part of the Colts defense in 2017 when they ran a three-man front and while he was a starter to begin the 2018 season working as the nose tackle, he quickly faded into a reserve role.

The veteran was a solid presence in the locker room, but couldn’t make enough of an impact during the second half of the season to warrant another contract.

I'm hoping they land Allen Bailey.
That would look like a real nice group to go to camp with.

Yah I wanted Shelton .. but that is not just Husky bias .. I watched the super bowl condensed game and they could not move him .. and I wanted a stouter run defense because those Viking pick ups .. we had the last couple years got pushed back.

I believe in Poona though they did not play him enough last year .. and that from what I gather is going to change.. Was thinking Shelton because he is young and hard to move could keep Reed and Poona fresh with Chrismas filling in too ...
Like Pete said they want to do.. and that seems smart.

After reading those forums .. (thanks for posting that btw) and watching some Al Woods 2017 tape ... wow .. I am glad coach is in charge an not me.

I am not saying Shelton sucks .. but this Al Woods dude .. (watch that 2017 tape and read what those fans said about him last year) .. While he can take on the double team just like Shelton .. don't let him not being 340 fool you .. the dude is strong .. but he can actually chase too .. now it was 2017 tape maybe he is not that active .. but even at 32 .. which is not crazy old .. strength stays ... with athletes longer ..

Initially bummed it was not Shelton .. but I get it .. shocker Pete and John know what they are doing. He will benefit along with the other DT's with a strong rotation ... man training camp is too far away..

One last thing .. said in another thread .. that I was hoping they take a flyer on Shane Ray .. and while at a low cost deal .. maybe .. but I kinda want to see what Griffin .. can do off the edge on 3rd downs.

Pete has mentioned that they may try this .. and it I hope they do .. I mean I know he is not that big but as a clean up athletic motor dude for depth.. it seems odd because he is not that big but Jacob Martin is not exactly huge and I want to see more of him.

Watching Griffin rush off the edge in college .. he is so freaking fast, it's like he is shot out of a cannon and he has bend and a spin move .. I am hoping he gets a shot .. not because he has one hand .. and it's a nice story .. but because he is 230 lbs, runs a 4.38 forty and may have a knack for it.

A back up will LB, a potential special teams stand out while also adding depth to the 3rd down pass rush .. would be a valuable piece of the roster.

I hope he gets a shot in that role .. it's what training camp is for.. can't wait .. damn .. it's still too far away... that is all.

As a depth Run stuffing NT to take some of the snaps and keep everyone fresh on a one year deal.. 2017 is not exactly a decade ago .. seems strong and active .. cool.. the last veterans they have brought in to fill this role were underwhelming this guy seems stout.

A Back up WLB, potential specail teams stand out and a depth 3rd down pass rush specialist at 230 lbs running 4.38 .. would be a valuable piece of the roster. I was thinking I want them to move on from this guy .. because well I just wasn't feeling him .. I know he was a rookie but he didn't pop for me .. but the Idea of him coming off the edge is intriguing and he could become a special teams ace as well.

Athletic, motor, clean up guy coming off the edge .. I mean he may have a knack for it .. he did pretty good in college for never rushing the passer before that year.. I hope he gets a shot like Pete said .. I will be the first to say .. nope .. he can't do it .. but I mean maybe.

If he could show a knack for some how rushing the passer on 3rd and long, while standing out on teams .. it would be a seahawky thing .. like having a 6'4" press corner from the CFL with a slow forty ... kid would be a cult hero and more importantly .. a valuable roster piece.

That's all a function of scheme fit and (mis)use. In 2017 under Chuck Pagano he was paired with a similar run-stopping DT in Johnathan Hankins to occupy gaps and the pair domimated against the run. This is clearly how Seattle envisions deploying Woods next to Jarran Reed (who can now slide over to 3T) in their base D. In 2018, under Matt Eberflus (new DC for Indy), the Colts' DT's were asked to be penetrators and even drop into coverage. This is not what Woods is made to be, and Woods was totally mis-cast for that type of role. In fact, Woods actually had the 4th most coverage drops among all interior DL's in the NFL in 2018, per PFF, which is borderline unforgivable. Used the right way, in the right scheme, Woods should flourish again.

Oh and one more thing the Hawks surely love about Woods.....at the 2010 Combine he measured 36" arms and 11" hands. That is ridiculous.

The $2.25 million one year contract matches the annual cost the Colts were paying. Al Woods saw 52.6% of defensive snaps in 2017 and 35.8% of defensive snaps in 2018. He contributes on special teams. He is a two gap capable veteran signed to compete with the rookie two gap capable nose tackles signed earlier in the month. The Seahawks are now three deep with big strong two gap linemen on the nose.

Nice depth and experience addition :2thumbs:

Thanks for contributing to Wood's background information. :2thumbs:
