  • When healthy he looks like a pro bowl TE ; but has only managed to appear in 10 games out of a possible 35 including 3 post season games . Should the Hawks take a serious look at the upcoming draft for a couple more TE's and FA TE's too ?

  • I think its highly likely they sign a TE. If you look at Pete and Johns history they have gone out and signed a vet TE pretty consistently.

  • Dissly has been an injury disappointment so far. I won't call him a "bust" yet. He has plenty of talent. He has demonstrated that. Hopefully he comes back again and can have a good long career here.

I expect the team to shore up the TE position this off season. I could live with Hollister hanging around and I'm not as down on Willson as some others are, but they are not #1 TE level talent. I expect to go into next year with 4TE.

  • Dissly is such a difference-maker when healthy. Wish we could keep him healthy for a full season. Notice how the 2 teams in the Owl have great tight ends? We need to add some badly, preferably in the draft instead of free agency.

  • Definitely have to sign someone. Wilson makes crappy TEs look half capable and good ones loom look spectacular. When Dissly got hurt the offense definitely did change. Need a TE who can block and catch. We need Zach Miller 2.0. As much as I like Dissly he hasn't been able to stay healthy. Also two very significant injuries so who knows how we will turn out moving fwd.

  • If only.... Can you imagine what a juggernaut this team would have been with Will Dissly playing? I think he can be on a production level with George Kittle. Not on an athletic level, as Kittle is an amazing athlete, but at a production level in catches and touchdowns. And as a better blocker. He just needs to learn how to take care of himself, and to NOT CONTORT his body like he did in the end zone.

But instead of having our own phenom Tight End, we got a receiving Tight End, a good all around Tight End, and then...well..nobody.

I think Will could have made the difference in 2 games because of his blocking and catching. But rather than a huge positive at Tight End, we had a huge negative, that cost us in games. When you go from a TE that is good at his job, to one that let's defensive linemen blow right by them, that's huge.

    If only...

  • I hope Dissly is able to get these injuries behind him, maybe spend a little less time around our strength and conditioning coach :D

I am OK with both Willson and Hollister, but I unfortunately think we do telegraph our plays a little bit when we have to use them. Hollister is not the best blocker, and Willson is not the best receiving option, so I'd imagine we have tendencies to use each of them depending on what kind of play it is.

  • Had Dissly played all season I don't have any doubt that we win at least 2 more games. Russell is clearly comfortable with him, he can make plays and is an excellent check down option, or a surprise option when the opposing defense is too worried about Lockett, Metcalf, or Carson. The kid just needs to stay healthy. Two years now his potential has been stunted and it's a real shame.

  • At this point he is unreliable. He injured himself on a non contact play.

Both of his injuries are the worst an athlete can have. On the upside, he's young but right now the Hawks need a TE.

As others have said on this thread, maybe get Hunter Henry or Hooper to be the #1 starting TE, and have Will be #2 and allowed to sit more and coast more of the season and stay healthy.

Was the best te statistically until he got injured for a few weeks. Probably get more than were willing to pay. I think the entire offense would benefit from an upgrade to this position.

  • On a positive note, he's only got one native achilles and one native patellar tendon left. So his injury risk is falling year by year. By year 5 he should be ready for a whole season and his second contract will be peanuts.

Gotta look at the bright side.

  • So what is the deal with Luke Willson then? He left the team, he came back, I don't ever recall him ever being considered a bad/we must replace him kind fo TE. Sure he might be older but he has good experience, is decent and probably a good backup.

EDIT: Doh! He had been discussed earlier in thread. :?

  • Sure, the SB two teams have great TEs, but this is irrelevant. It’s like the Niners have a great run system and everyone should do this. Duh. Been running the ball before it became a trend.

As most have said, TE is a key position in Schotty’s system. TEs had 50+ receptions at NY Jets and Rams when he was their OC. Again, before this became a trend.

Getting a TE will be a point of emphasis.

The offense was crippled when we lost Dissly. Having Dickson on IR for 2 years didn’t help. The Hawks will not make this mistake again. They will get a TE, maybe two, because this is a key position in this system.

I don't think that a team can get to the SB without a stud TE in this era of the NFL , It is relevant .IMO

I find it unlikely they'll get a top free agent TE. A late round pick and a blocking vet TE on a favorable deal is the most likely scenerio

  • I'd bet they have a list of their most coveted TEs available in the draft, as well as at every position of need. I think they'll just see how the draft is going before they decide when to take their best shot. But unless something REALLY good shows up in FAs I would wait to go on that until after the draft. There a a number of good O Linemen (especially center) in the draft, and that is definitely a need. I think the DE spot isn't so strong in the draft so that and CB are what I'd be looking to see what FA has to offer.
The thing about experienced O Linemen is they usually have a collection of injury baggage. That's why I don't mind going young and injury free for them.

    From PFF:

Hooper has developed into a solid receiving option, but he’s more of a dependable, complementary piece rather than a mismatch creator. Since 2016, Hooper has gained 75.5% of his receiving production on targets defined as holes in zones or underneath the defense (think drag routes, flat routes) — by far the highest percentage in the league. Add to it that Hooper has just a 58.9 receiving grade against single coverage since 2016, and it’s clear that his production has largely been a product of the situation in Atlanta. All that said, Hooper is a mid-tier run blocker who can take advantage of being surrounded by good playmakers on the outside, and he has value as a complementary piece in the passing game.

  • It's adjacent to the topic, but I think people really underestimate how hard the TE position is, and how hard to evaluate the TE position is.

I have no data to back it up, but my *guess* is that the hit rate on supposedly excellent TEs taken in the first round might be the lowest position group hit rate in the NFL. It seems like there's a couple of these guys every year and they practically never pan out.

  • Why not get Hooper and Henry. I'd like to line up in 2 wr 2 Te sets with them on the field. Is it max protect for deep routes to Tyler or DK, are we cramming it down their throat with Carson or do we bust them up the seem for cheating up on the run. Give Russ weapons. Look at how Kelce, Gronk, and Kittle have kept drives alive and made their QBs look elite.

  • I don't see much value is ditching Dissley for a FA that has been injured. We already have Dissley. If there is an attractive candidate available by the time we get to that need I like the rookie angle. Otherwise go with what we've got. Hollister will continue to improve and we know Willson will give his all. It isn't like those two guys are bad. They just aren't elite talents, which is exactly what we'll likely get in the later rounds ot UFAs.

  • Dissly is one of our best contracts at the moment and there's zero chance we "move on" from him. Dickson has been the bad contract that we will likely replace.

I agree with Popeye that TE seems very tough to scout in the NFL. We should keep gambling on it with a mid round pick (or two) every year given the importance to this team.

We typically have 6 or 7 TEs on the 90 man roster. With Dissly's recovery there's a high likelihood that we have seven to start with this season. Dissly, Hollister, Willson, Swoopes, UFA, Rookie/UDFA, Rookie/UDFA seems like a safe bet.

  • Dissly, Hollister, Willson and a rookie draft pick will be just fine for me. I'm with the group that thinks the team should spend the cap elsewhere (DLine and OLine) than on a good to mediocre TE castoff from another team.

I am uncertain though that Dissly will ever be able to play a whole season, but the team got good service from both Willson and Hollister who had earned RW's trust by the end of the year. Adding a rookie TE in the draft with some potential is the most economical way of restocking the position while keeping open the potential of a Dissly return to form while insuring depth. If Hollister continues to grow and Dissly disappoints then there is room to bring a rookie with potential along. Willson ensures there is sufficient depth.

  • I disagree. We see how a good TE is such a mismatch and tough to cover. Elite teams seem to mostly have a good TE. Hollister is just a guy...Willsson is pretty much done and Dissly is a huge question mark.
