Wyman: Why do sacks matter? Look at the 26 drives when Seahawks had one

This is how the 26 drives that included one or more Seahawks sacks ended:

• One defensive TD (the aforementioned Clowney return)
• Six fumble recoveries
• One interception (Bradley McDougald)
• One end of game (27-10 win over Arizona, Week 4)
• One turnover on downs
• Two missed field goals
• Seven punts
• Seven field goals

What stands out to me?

Zero touchdowns.

It's very clear the Hawks deficiencies. I'm confident this will be a thing not talked about next year. It's going to make our secondary better.

I'm not sure if sacks are actually "devalued." They are important, and the more you can get the better, obviously.

The thing about hits and hurries are how they lead to bad throws and interceptions and getting the QB off his rhythm. They help a lot in those aspects. They are really nice to have.

But yeah, sacks are the holy grail of pass defense. I've always used a sort of a benchmark, in which a team that gets more than 40-45 sacks has a much better chance of getting into the playoffs. We had 28 in 2019 IIRC and still made it, but yes, it was a lot harder to do it than if we could get the sack differential more in our team favor.

I'm sure Schneider is working on it. The problem being that when teams find sack prolific players they are reluctant to let them go and college players who can get them shoot up the draft board.

Sacks are drive-enders.

Much more valuable than pressures.

Nice work iotuk, and very effective.
Do you have the same shot for how our drives ended when Russ was sacked?

I believe Dave Wyman is working on the 2nd part of his "Sackstravaganza" which deals with that specifically.

But Russell Wilson is a rare talent that can overcome a sack. Some of those sacks though are on him, some were on the decimated Tight End group, some were on the decimated OLine, some were on the decimated Running Backs, and some, IMHO, were on the conservative playcalling early when it got us behind in the "schedule."

I believe that with a few tweeks, and some health tight ends, we can drastically cut his sacks in 2020.

Nope because next play he probably threw for 20yds

That and he's so used to getting sacks, holding and false start penalties he's pretty much become a master of the 3rd and long by this point.

Sacks are just glorified tackles for loss. Tfl's are the true measure of a defence.
