  • That's all good news for the Hawks with Carson also being a free agent. There are going to be plenty of good deals to be had, and any RB expecting huge money is going to be disappointed. Carson not even making the list is an oversight, but he will be very motivated - should there be an NFL season this year.

  • I feel we could draft a good RB next year ?
Early reports saying next years draft should should be pretty
    deep in RB talent.

  • RB has become a draft position. Paying second contracts to them is not the norm. Especially in Pete's system.

What about Pete says he doesn't like paying running backs second contracts? He gave Marshawn Lynch a sizable extension. If we look at the NFL Christian McCaffrey just got a huge extension, and Gurley was also signed to a large extension not too long ago. Yes Gurley didn't work out, but it goes to show teams aren't shy about signing top end running backs to large contracts. We just haven't had a running back since Lynch that was worth extending, Carson included.

It's not an oversight. Carson's a very good runningback but he is not going to cost very much on the open market. His injury history is a concern to many teams, including Seattle who apparently even had Jonathan Taylor pretty high on their board. Both Penny and Carson have proven that they are unable to stay healthy and really reputation will screw a runningback over.

  • It's a draft position. Running backs are good for 4 to 5 years on average. So if you give that second contract at high money, it means your QB and the majority of your team is pretty average.

It also means you aren't confident in finding runners in the draft and this f o seems to be fairly decent at that.

  • The market for RBs next year should be heavily depleted.

It's an exceptional RB class coming out. Many draft eligible players opted to return to school last year. The UFA RB class is loaded. So I would expect contracts to be heavily suppressed.

I love Carson and would like to retain him. But we don't need to pay even 5M annually to get a reasonable replacement (not equivalent but close enough). Problem is, with RBs, you have to maximize that second deal. Because 3rd deals are almost unheard of.

  • Derrick Henry will sign long term soon so he is not an option but he would have been the best.

We absolutely should have taken an RB with our first pick this last draft instead of LB. We had our pick of them and blew it.
