This may be a dumb question, but when guys get IR'd like Jesse Williams for example, do they hang around the facility all season with the team (watch practices, attend film sessions, get instruction etc)?

I remember seeing pictures of him this year on Twitter training (not in Seattle) and wondered what the standard protocol was or what they're allowed to do with the team.

Pretty sure they're allowed to rehab with the team. Probably encouraged to do so, because outside rehab can sometimes have negative results, so the trainers/team docs like to keep it in house. I'm pretty sure they're allowed to hang/train with the team normally. It's not like they're suspended.

Simplest explanation is that they can't practice in any normal capacity like drills and scrimmaging. They can participate in the classroom, meetings and weight room to the extent that they are at the facility. You may see them on the sidelines during games in street clothes, or they may be in rehab. Some injuries require rehab work every day of the week, and it's easier to fit it in if you're not at away games or even home games in certain circumstances.

Depending on the nature of the injury they may be rehabbing elseware. Especially if you need frequent followups by some nationally recognized orthopedist whose office is in Georgia.

Each case is done individually. I know Percy had to see specialists in NY, so he had to travel there quite a bit. There is no rule stipulating that a player can or cannot be with the team while on IR. Those rules only apply to suspended players. Even players like Percy who have specialists will still work closely with team doctors though.

I always wondered why Jesse Williams was in Australia instead of rehabbing with the team

I have read and heard about players that opt to rehab at home versus remaining in the local area and rehabbing at the team's facility. They probably have to check in from time to time but I don't think they are required to remain in the local area. You will read sometimes where other players criticize a player on IR for not staying involved with the team.

Isn't that where his family is?

Yeah...I know he's an Aussie but you'd think the team would want to keep a close eye on his progress. Plus even if he couldn't do anything physical, there's always the benefits of being around the team and in the filmroom

Pretty sure I remember either an interview or a tweet from him saying he was told by the team to just go home for a few months, rest his knee, work the upper body and come back at the end of the regular season so they can evalute the knee.

Is there any chance that there are some things in Australia that are legal but not in this country?I know some players go to Europe for some.

Yup. It was in a presser. Williams and the Coaches met and decided it was the best course of action.

Seems a little odd, I might be jumping to conclusions but I doubt he is one the roster week 1. Would be a bummer as I he was my adopt a rookie.

Excellent thought. Most countries are not as bass ackwards as ours and I'm certain HGH is available in Oz. IIRC, I believe Stallone was popped at the Oz airport bringing home a bag full of Jintropin (Chinese made HGH...good stuff).

Not suggesting HGH is not available in the US, it is, but only by prescription and with it (strangely) on the NFL's banned list, it probably doesn't matter in this example.

I just can't get my head around why it is illegal for athletes to recover from injury using HGH in America. My healing times after injury and soreness after intense training is halved when on HGH. I'd recommend it highly to anyone (after first consulting their doctor).

The same goes for moderate dosages of testosterone. Don't believe all the BS we're fed. Research, live longer, stronger and feel free to PM me if you'd like to know what to tell your doctor (don't ask, tell).

I was actually thinking more like what Kobe Bryant did going to Germany for PRP injections for his arthritic knees.

That too. Didn't Sid Rice just do that in Switzerland? Guess he shoulda' went with the higher dosage, for sure.

I don't know a lot about the PRP....isn't that where they spin your blood to get to the platelets (?) then inject it into the site that requires healing? If so, I want some of that action, too.

Yes and sometimes they mix the blood with other things when they inject it back in. I think you might be right about Rice. Someone else may know more about what he did than me.

LOL. I just checked it out. I think the PRP thing is actually legal in the US, but Rice, Manning Bryant etc are traveling to Europe for Stem cell therapy. True to form, American medicine is "decades behind in this proven technology". Oh good.
