This was originally on Insider and has now been reposted to Football Outsiders:

Here's a fun fact: The Super Bowl champions had an offensive line that finished dead last in both actual sack rate (9.5 percent) and Adjusted Sack Rate, which accounts for down, distance, and opponent.

Adding Bailey as an extra tackle for the last couple games really seemed to help.

Wonder if records would have been broken if Okung, Unger, and Giacomini hadn't returned? The pass pro actually put up very respectable sack numbers when we had our starters back. It was incredibly bad before then though. We had McQuistan and a 7th round rookie at tackle.

Man, if only they had a quarterback that could make up for it. One that wasn't just a "game manager."
A crappy O-line over time can still ruin Wilson. Don't believe otherwise.

It is a miracle we had as good of a year that we did. Seriously, one of the most important parts of the team (O-line) was down for over half the year and we won the freaking Super Bowl. Shows just how good the Defense and the other parts of the Offense were doing to keep things going.

This. It's not hard to see how a couple seasons like the last one could lead to David Carr disease.

Thats bologna David Carr had David Carrs disease because he was David Carr he was never a good QB. His sacks were in large part because he couldn't make a decision and would wind up getting sacked. Russ isn't and never will be David Carr because he has already shown that with what is probably a worse line than Carr had.
Wilson has a far better makeup and will not lose that because he lacks a good O line. Although it just may get him injured but injuries are so unpredictable anyway. Regardless of how good your O line is.

Just think if our O-line plays 50% better than last year how dangerous it will be. Also having a man with a built in jet (Harvin) in full participation will change so much of the dynamics. Stack the box to stop the beast jet sweep for 15 yrds. Got to like that.

You all just assume that somehow we got lucky in winning the Super Bowl, when practically every playoff team had a better O-line than we did.

Does not Occam's Razor (i.e. simplest explanation is usually correct) imply that maybe, just maybe, the offensive line is not the be-all and end-all of a football team?

Considering that Pittsburgh and Green Bay have both won titles recently, I think you might be on to something. Neither team has had a good O-line in years.

Two things...One is above....Percy. If he stays healthy fantastic. The other more important thing is Russell. He seems to obey the mantra....If you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail. His practice ethic and preparation ethic is dynamic. If you practice for mistakes and errors, then you will succeed ever so much more. Sometimes it is your mistake to recover from and sometimes it is the other player's mistake or something they do that changes how you operate. Prepare for all and include contingency situations and you prepare for a championship.

O-Line gets addressed every year, and this year won't be any different. Ours held the fort down for over a half of a season with the bookends down. The play at that time was inconsistent which should be expected.
