Just tweeted this:

Salary cap projected to rise to about $133 million this year, expected to break $140 million next year and $150 million by 2016, per source

That increase essentially takes care of the next Russell Wilson contract, and unless we see rapid inflation at the top of the pay scale, it just got a heck of a lot easier to keep Richard Sherman long term.

It will certainly help, but I doubt the 7M increase will cover Russells new deal.

In the first year, depending on the contract is structured, it will get very close.

We need to lock down Earl, Sherm and hopefully Mr. Wilson before agents use this as a bargaining chip for a higher salary.

As soon as baseball got their tv money, teams are "over paying" but that's just the new market value. Lock these guys up now before the salary increase and their deals will seem more friendly down the line.

Why does it become easier?

The agents will still be fighting for a contract which is based on a percentage of the salary cap.

Exactly right. Just because the cap number increases doesn't mean player salaries stay where they are at now. Salaries will also increase based on the bigger pool. Top QB's will be $21M per year for example instead of $20M.

Well, the salaries that are already locked up in long-term deal will at least.

And it's not a guarantee that every FA is going to suddenly ask x% more just because the cap rose x%. The market for specific positions is still going to dictate the bulk of what FAs are going to see in new deals.

In before someone says Wilson will now ask for 7M more a year

If you go over the 12 million offer that has been proffered, you're right.

It matters if you lock them up through extensions the year before big increases are confirmed.

Also, contract values are determined by comparables from the previous year. It's just like real estate. RW's deal will largely be based on what Kaepernick and Newton are paid. Eventually, those prices rise, but it usually lags behind increases in the cap.

What offer are you referring to?

I'm joking about the threads that claim Wilson wouldn't take positional value for a QB, but would accept a Brady deal.

1. The agents and teams would have a general idea of what the future salary cap figures will be. It is based off of a formula and it would not be difficult to make projections.

2. I'd argue that the agent is also looking at the % of the cap used and not just dollar value comparables from previous contracts. The increase in the salary cap is like inflation. If the player isn't going to market and being able to find out their value, then they will compare to previous year contracts and apply the inflation rate.

e.g. It is a broad generalization because the contract is made up of many years, guaranteed money and bonuses, etc. but if Cam Newton receives 15% of the salary cap in 2015, then Russell Wilson will be expecting 15% of the cap in 2016.
