ESPN lists Brandon Mebane as the 94th best defensive player in the NFL.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/11258 ... nse-100-91

The Seahawks allowed 3.4 yards per rush with Mebane on the field last season, compared to 4.8 yards per rush without him. He is one of two defensive tackles to start 16 games in each of the last three seasons.

I'm ecstatic that Mebane is finally starting to get some of the respect he deserves. Nobody knows about him, but he is elite.

Also, somewhat surprisingly, we must give kudos to ESPN for recognizing him.

Actually, hes the 94th defensive player.

They are doing a top 100 for both offense and defense.

I cant name 93 people that are better on defense. Maybe 60 tops.

Baby steps, Cartire. Baby steps.

Step one of making the list has been accomplished. Now enemy fans will pay a little more attention to him.

Yeah, that last part actually surprises me.

it gives me chills that when I was 16 I was screaming at the TV for the seahawks to chose Brandon Mebane . Only because of something I was reading and his name is awesome so I figured he was going to be the man .

to this day he remains the only draft pick I guessed correctly and the only time I was screaming at my tv . Thanks for making me proud Mebane

The outlets put a premium on the sexy stats. It takes a lot of actual work and scouting to rank the value of space eaters and containment specialists.

Mebane is crucial to this team. I could see him having the longevity of Pat Williams.

Those interior linemen always get overlooked. However, all of US know the play he brings on every snap. He also happens to be the longest tenured Hawk.

Mass respect for The Bane.

I wonder where they rank Knighton.

I might be a little biased but Brandon Mebane was the best Defensive Lineman on the field during the Superbowl... on both sides.

I also might be a little biased but Brandon Mebane also has been a fringe Pro Bowl level talent since entering the NFL, and the last 2 years he's been playing at an All-Pro level.

Bane has been one of the most consistent DTs of the last 7 years, he's like Kevin Williams without all the accolades.

It broke my heart when Mebane missed the 2008 pro bowl and didn't even appear to come close. Elite level run defense with 5 sacks (from the 1 tech) and a bunch of TFL's. The Seahawks were terrible that year but who cares, he was robbed.

I feel like the 93 ranking among defenders feels about right to me (he's actually ahead of Randy Starks who's really really good). 93rd would make him on average the 3rd or 4th best defender on a typical NFL team. For a guy that is good against the run but no longer puts up great pass rush stats, I am okay with that ranking because good run stoppers are not as rare as people think.

And also, because our run defense was not elite last year despite a huge commitment to run defense. Seattle had Mebane, McDaniel and Red last year as starters and per FO the Hawks run defense was just barely above the median. Arizona's run defense blew Seattle's out of the water with less of a commitment to stopping the run. It's hard to look at those numbers and think Mebane is ultra-elite, I think it would be more accurate to say he's currently fringe pro-bowl caliber (he should have made it last year, that Seattle's historically good defense only produced 3 pro-bowlers is a joke).

It would be nice if he made a pro-bowl this year now that he's finally getting some national attention. His situation reminds me a lot of Mack Strong, a guy who was a really good player for ages but went ignored, only to get two pro-bowls at the end thanks to Shaun and that legendary OL.

I think if the Seahawks wanted to, they could put Mebane in the position to get some sacks. Dude is tremendously quick for his size. But he's just elite at clogging gaps vs the Run as well as being able to take on double teams while still being able to collapse the pocket as a pass-rusher and let his teammates get 1 on 1 situations. Mebane is also one of most unselfish players I've seen, he does whatever is asked of him, he stays consistent play in and play out, game in and game out, week in and week out, year in and year out, and he even signed a decent contract, yeah he got 5 for 25mil but his SB was relatively low at just 1 mil.

Compared to a true one dimensional player like Red Bryant who re-signed for 5 yrs, 35 mil, 5m SB.

The fact that he never gets any respect and is such an anchor for us is why I wear his jersey. Plus my daughter likes his belly-roll.

How could you be so right about Mebane and so wrong about Harvin?

Mebane has become what Marcus Tubbs should have been, and was, briefly...too briefly due to injury.
