So I’ve been looking at this website and have found a few interesting stats from this year’s penalty impact vs last year’s data. The data is the aggregate of all NFL teams’ penalties on a per game basis.
http://www.nflpenalties.com/index.php?&year=2014

Offensive line holding calls called per week across the NFL

2013: 41.28 calls per week

2014: 35.13 calls per week

Defensive Holding calls called per week

2013: 10.79 calls per week

2014: 15.32 calls per week

Defensive Pass Interference

2013: 14.79 calls per week

2014: 15.08 calls per week

Illegal Contact

2013: 2.31 calls per week

2014: 7.09 calls per week

Total Offensive Penalties

2013: 97.92 calls per week

2014: 114.53 calls per week

Total Defensive Penalties

2013: 96.63 calls per week

2014: 107.2 calls per week

Total Yard From Penalties Per Week

2013: 1,679.68 yards per week

2014: 1,883.71 yards per week

Total Penalties called per week

2013: 194.56 calls per week

2014: 221.71 calls per week

Some interesting stats… One that points out most to me is the number of penalties called per week has increased a lot. As a result, everyone gets to watch games that are more influenced by the refs, and longer boring segments waiting to hear what the call is. Definitely not what a average fan wants to see when watching football on Sundays.

Seahawks have 8.5 penalties per game in 2014, compared to 8 in 2013.

An increaee of a 5 flags thrown per week across the league doesn't say much. Except thery're "catching" a small handful of potential fouls.

I'd like to see a comparison drawn between 2010-2012 and 2013-2015. Games were at least watchable a few years ago, nowadays there is a pause in the action every other minutes because of some ticky tack call.

Are refs trying too hard to make the right call or simply not very good at what they do? If these are the best refs available...then damn...send these dolts back to ref school.
