  • No!

Even though I'm still a newbie and didn't know him as long as most of you, this has come as a real shock!

Les made me feel so welcome when I first joined and PM'd me a couple of times. He spoke of his family and was interested in my life on the boat.

Like many have said, I am really glad he got to see the Seahawks raise the Lombardi.

I'm going to miss him. :(

    Rest In Peace, Radish

  • Oh wow.

    This is just... heartbreaking.

I hope you're in a better place Les. Thank you for everything you've done.
I enjoy ruining threads by making them about personal attacks and then commenting about how personal attacks make the other person's argument invalid.

  • The only person to PM me on here. I don't post much, so that's part of it, but he took time out to talk to me about my impending military retirement after a little post about my service. I will miss his jokes in the shack, and his general presence. Godspeed, sir. You will be missed.

  • I never had the chance to meet Les but like most of you received PM's from him from time to time (especially when I was a new) I always appreciated his guidance. As some one already added he was grandfatherly.
Though I do not consider myself to be religious my own grandfather was an Episcopal Bishop and more importantly kind man full of endless wisdom. In his papers I found a brief sermon that I would like to share for Les. I hope that in this case it's okay.

Grant O lord that because we have met together here...
that life may grow greater for some who have lost faith in it,
simpler for some who are confused by it,
Happier for some who are tasting the bitterness of it,
Safer for some who are feeling the peril of it.
More friendly for some who are feeling the loneliness of it.
And holier for some to whom life has lost its dignity, beauty, and its meaning.

lord support us all the day long, until the shadows lengthen and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done.
Then in thy mercy grant Les a safe lodging, and a holy rest, and peace at the last...
    Amen

  • I just got back from a walk after the game and logged in to see how everyone was doing after the loss of the game and saw this post. I am just shocked, stunned, saddened. (heartbroken)I thought he was doing better and would be alright...I have been hanging around this site for 16+ years now and Les has always been nice to me, a friend to me. One of the few on this site that I have ever exchanged messages with. I never met him and now wish I had.(but still feel like I knew him) My thoughts are with his family and those who knew him. God bless you Les, we did it! Super Bowl Champions! I'm going to raise my 12th Man flag for you at the game on Sunday, love you buddy! :icon_new:

  • [I posted this at his "gift" page]

This is the kind of man Les is [hard to say was] a true "Defender of the Faith." He would come to your aid when you needed solace, a shoulder, a hand and I'm my opinion, he sacrificed so much for the members of this forum.
In his last email to me, [9/9/2014] he referred to some physical problems he was having and in my return email I told him I would pray for him and his beloved wife, Darlene [who emailed me about his passing. I believe in the power of prayer. It was just Les' time.

In the sky tonight, you will see a particular star shinning brighter than the others and almost pulsating with life. It will shine a most vibrant gold but with a thin blue halo around it telling everyone about the team he loved so much.

That star will never fade and at times will glow even brighter.

I love you Les and pray Darlene heals the pain that makes her heart cry.

  • I don't suppose there is any way we could get a "in memory of" on the big screen at the game Sunday? Don't think it would hurt the Seahawks in any way to flash it up there when they are doing the welcomes on the screen?

  • Though we'd only spoken a few times via PM, I appreciated his perspective. For one, Les was left-handed, and we bonded a bit over that.

A giant on this site, and he's irreplaceable.

  • This was received via the admin email. It deserves a spot here:

    Hello-
My name is Roger. I'm a franchise long Seahawks fan
and a long time lurker on .Net.
I've never joined up mainly because I don't think I would
have very much to add to all the really fine posts.
Plus, the trolls would just get me to say what I was thinking ;-)

But, I wanted to tell *somebody* there that, I too will miss Radish.
I would read a post and say to myself "right" or "yep" or some such.
Then I would then see that it was Radish. I would think "us old guys
are a lot a like" [I'm 53, but still feel 30 - well not in my body]
Anyway, thanks for allowing me to tell someone.

Bye, Radish you never knew me, but I knew you.

  • My condolences to Les's family first of all. Les has been dear to all here at the NET, an awesome friend, one of the greatest 12th man fans that I've had the opportunity to talk football with here on this board. Les was always one you could count on to speak his mind or put you in your place...if needed. He would recognize birthdays, talk about his dogs, give a listening ear whenever needed.

I had always wished to go to one of the .NET get togethers and meet Les face to face, but I have now missed a great opportunity to meet such a wonderful friend such as Les.

    We'll miss you buddy.

  • Dang. Horrible news. From the passed Brian Jacques:

    Rose's Farewell Song:

Goodbye, my friend, and thank you, thank you, thank you,
It makes me sad to leave you upon this summer(Autumn) day.
Don't shed a tear or cry now. Goodbye now, goodbye now.
I'm sure I'll see you somehow, if I pass by this way,
    For seasons don't foretell
Who must stay or say farewell,
And I must find out what lies beyond this place.
But I know deep in my heart
    We are never far apart
While I have a mem'ry of your smiling face.
Goodbye, my friend, and thank you, thank you, thank you,
You kindness guides me ever as I go on my way.

Best wishes to his family and everyone near to him.

  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

To just find a friend these last few years and lose them this early hurts. And believe me, Les was, and always will be, a friend. We just traded a couple of brief emails after the first week's games. I am sure he wouldn't mind if I shared them with y'all.

    Sorry my friend

    Les Norton to you

What a wild and disappointing finish to that game. I was pulling for your guys all the way. Can’t believe Atlanta of all people came back like that.

    Les

Thanks, Les. It was a punch in the stomach, but it is still only one game. I have been through far worse as a Saints fan. That is for sure. LOL

    RE: Sorry my friend

Thank goodness its early in the season so things like that can be over come. Hope this finds you and yours well.

That is the friend I had begun to know. He cared enough to reach out to someone he had only communicated with online in his final days trying to give some comfort.

I need to stop now. My damned nose is starting to get all runny ... as are my eyes.

This post (and the others from non seahawk fans) are such a testament to the man that Les was. It didn't matter who you rooted for, he would still find something to bond with you over and once there was a bond you had a friend for life.

I really need to stop reading this thread (and the others) I tear up every time. I miss Les so much already, yet it doesn't quite seem real....then I read the latest posts in here...

  • I had the privilege of meeting Les nine years ago in Cheney. I introduced myself and held out my hand to shake. He took one look at me and said, 'BROTHER'S GOTTA HUG!!!'. Had a good laugh over it, especially since back then, I didn't know just how I'd be received amongst fellow .netters, given my controversial takes on the team back in the day, but Les was totally cool, and we hit it off really well.

It's been many years since I've seen him, but this has hit me like a ton of bricks. My sincere condolences go out to the entire Norton family.

RIP and Godspeed my friend. You are, and will be missed.

Football is fun and quite a welcome diversion from life's junk. But it's obvious, from the people like Les and Asylum, that life here on this globe, and the relationships we make with good people far outweigh the teams we root for. Thanks for setting the bar high, gentlemen! Les's impact and influence will live on...

  • The thing that really stands out here is just how loved he was. Not because he was a longtime member, but because he honestly seemed to care about the people behind the post.

When I joined, he sent me a few notes sharing his thoughts about things I mentioned about my own personal connection to the Hawks and my own life. I thought that was a one-off, but clearly he did that with everyone. Which is a big deal.

It shows in the connections he made in person and in the fact that so many people that never even met him - seemed to know him just from their emails/PMs. And that does not count the personal emails I received, and clearly so many others did.

I have always believed that the measure of value in a soul is the difference you make while you are here. There is an obvious difference that he made in the lives of many here, and that is evident from the reaction and the posts.

I cannot say I had the personal connection others had but I can say that I enjoyed the connection I had and really respected his thoughts apart from the Hawks part.

I also really enjoyed his posts. He was almost a rudder that kept people on track when they veered off course and when something was clearly wrong he would personally reach out to you to see how you were. Who does that?

I thought he was really nice to me, considering how much I use this for catharsis. Turns out he was nice to damned near everyone and that is actually really impressive.

  • I've been reading some of my favorite PM's from Les the last few days. I wish people would share more of them like Guido just did. Les was a great voice of reason who could keep any topic from escalating too quickly. His rebukes we're never offensive, they were sincere and gracious. Reminds me of the saying, "It's easy to tell someone to go to hell, it's hard to get them to thank you for giving directions".

I'm already missing him on these boards. I have about 15 PM's, twelve are from Les, and no, they aren't all "Check your PM's"

While I was reading his messages, I couldn't help but reflect on his banner. "Cheinhill, gone, but not forgotten". That is a true statement , Cheinhill is still not forgotten, but he is a little less lonely.

    A typical PM from Les

    Guys,

I've battled some adversity in my life that has allowed me to cherish and be grateful for each and every day I have. That being said, If I could I would fast forward to the beginning of the season. I am that excited. I would give up a month of my life without blinking.

The potential of greatness also brings with it the potential for dissapointment, as a Seattle Everything's fan, one would think that would be front and center in my thought process. With this team it's not. This team is special and I'm very much looking forward to a helluva ride.

Driver you made my day. I too am challanged with the word disappointed. two s's or two Ps? Have to ask myself every damned time I use the word.

    hahahahaha

  • What a sad day... Through the years Les always took the time to calm me when I was angry. I know that Les left happy as he told me the Seahawks winning the Super Bowl would grant him his happiness before he left.... He really was a role model and I am deeply hurt by this news...

This reminds me of Les.... :les:
    Thank you :les: ... RIP

  • DAMN what a horrible way to start the day.

I never met Radish face to face but everything I read told me he was a humble and genuinely nice person.

To his family and all of you his friends at .NET my prayers are with you all. :(

  • It has taken me three days to think of something to write about Les. I honestly still do not have the words. He was the first to welcome me to the site a couple of years ago, and as it turned out he and I had a few things in common, dating back to the 80’s and drag racing in Spokane. As others have mentioned I will likely never delete the IM’s he and I shared. I will truly miss his input and even his moderation around here.

Farewell Les, and my sincere and deepest condolences to his family!

  • I just heard about Les... I am at an absolute loss for words. I wouldn't even know where to start

He was one of the first people to make me feel like part of the .NET family waaaaay back in 2005 when I first joined. Even though I don't come here often anymore, Les & I would still exchange the occasional email checking in with each other. He will be greatly missed. My deepest sympathies to Darlene.

    Rest in peace, Les :les:

I never met Les, but the guy really left an impression on me, through PMs and just his nature on the site. He was like the kooky grandpa of .NET, I loved his posts whenever he'd chime in — just a great guy all around and a great personality. Putting a face on "Radish" for me means a lot, Thanks Largent80, before I just thought he looked like a yellow circle head with a cane. :les:

I'm so glad he was able to make it on this Earth long enough to witness our first Championship.

    Be at peace, my friend.

  • Being a somewhat new poster here I didn't know Radish as well as most of you. But sure enough he took the time to PM me to try to help me when I posted a problem I had with the avatar file size limit.

That just shows the kind of great guy he was to reach out and help anyone who needed it. That's a rare trait and I'm very sad to hear this news.

  • I never met Les in person but through just a few PMs his character and kindness showed through. I had a relative I was worried about navigating through Spokane ( she comes from a town of 300).Les offered multiple different routes to get her around the worst of the traffic. The next thing I know he offers that if needed he will help guide her through town. I know that we are all 12's but that is going above and beyond. The world lost a good man and I wish I could have met him in person before I returned to California. My condolences to his family and thank you for the time you allowed Radish to be here and benefit us all.

  • I just saw this (obviously haven't been hanging out here enough lately). Les was such a nice person. He made me feel welcome on this board from the first days I posted years ago and he helped make these boards one of the best on the net. It won't be the same place without him. RIP, Radish.

  • I will miss Les. From the beginnings of my time on the old site and here, he was always fun to talk to, and he became my friend on facebook, even though we are many years apart in age. We used to share info on how our families were doing, and he would always send me a little note when something important in my life was happening......

Les, you have a PM from god......check your PMs

    I'll miss you bud.
