Photos & Thoughts from the Les "Radish" Norton Memorial

A collection of NET's best and most memorable threads. Predictions, debates, laughs, and X's & O's. LANGUAGE RATING: PG to NC-17
  • I had the honor of attending the memorial service for Les and wanted to share some of the photos with all of you. I especially appreciated fellow .NET'ers and friends John (Hawkstorian), Will (Shadowhawk), and Chris & Wife (Kixkahn) for showing up to represent what he meant to this community.

John was asked to go up and speak, and he did a beautiful job of summarizing some wonderful thoughts and anecdotes. I followed up by sharing one of the thoughts from the RIP thread, and it seemed well received. Even Darlene started it all off by talking about what .NET meant to Les, and read a letter from one of our own that she received after his passing.

I know his family appreciated our community's support & love during this tough time, so I thank all of you for doing your small part.

Here's some photos of the event and display showing some of the items that meant so much to Les, including the items from all of you.

RIP Les, you'll never be forgotten.

  • I really wish I could have been there. I am grateful for those of you who were able to attend. I know deep in my heart Les was there as well and that he's touched by the outpouring of love from the community he gave so much of his time to.

Awesome to see photos of him from his youth. We're not always old coots. :)

Until we meet again my friend. :les: :vodka:

  • It was a very special occasion -- there were probably 100 people there.

I was scheduled to speak even though I didn't know it! I pointed out that Les touched thousands of people through .NET and I hope I can keep a part of him with me by trying to follow his example -- to be more open with people and to live life fully and without fear.

Big KUDOS to Mark and Will for making the trip to Spokane for the service. I was great to see you guys and sorry I couldn't stick around longer.

  • Thanks you guys. I know at least 2 of you that were there, and I have to say I really appreciate the photos.

The big guy was a part of my every day life (almost) for over 13 years. I am thankful I met and knew him.

It was and still is, an honor. I miss ya Les if you can somehow see this.

  • I am so thankful that I was able to go last night. We all know what a special person Les was and seeing the impact he had on so many people... like John said, I only hope I can learn from his example and live the kind of rich, full life that he did.

It was great to see RockHawk, Hawkstorian and Kixkahn there, too. And for all of the .Netters who would have been there if you could, rest assured that you were there in spirit.

  • A bit of backstory is needed here. Les and I flipped crap at each other since 2000 anyway, perhaps even earlier. Mostly about cars, but we touched on many subjects. He was my guide so to speak, on how to navigate on the Hawks site. In 2006 or 7, my memory getting hazy now, some peeps were calling him out, ragging him about being stodgy, a curmudgeon etc. So, since my cousin had just sent ME an old Coot society diploma, I Pmed Les and asked for his address. He passed it on, so I went to the site, ginned up an old Coot diploma for him and mailed it off.

Two days later the phone rings. 509 call but a prefix I don't know. I answer and it is Les, laughing his ass off! He thought that silly Old Coot whatever was about the funniest thing he had ever recieved. That was the start of many phone conversations between us, and 1 thing I could always count on was Les would give me a damn near terminal case of phone ear before they ended.

My wife and I had the extreme pleasure of hosting Les and Darlene for 3 days earlier this year. Instant connection! Felt like family, and I will always regret that it rained Thursday, and my seed customers called Friday wanting their seed yesterday. Ergo, we could not make it to Spokane for the service physically, but our hearts were certainly there. Gratifying that as many as could made it to the memorial.

Les, my 64 Olds Cutlass is still the bomb!

  • Thanks for the post and pictures as well as being there for less and those of us wanting to attend but having the inability to do so.

This community is forever lessened for his loss, but ever stronger and more bonded in light of it.

    God Bless you Les!

Darlene and Family, you're always a part of us and I hope you continue to visit or drop in !
