Here's some info on the rule changes.

• Introducing the medical timeout -- a third party has power to stop a game if a player appears disoriented.

• Rule for a peel-back block changed to include all offensive players being penalized as opposed to just those inside the tackle box.

• Rule protecting receivers changed, extending the protection if the pass is intercepted and they remain unable to defend themselves from a hit.

• Outside the tight end area, it is now illegal for a back to chop a defensive player engaged above the waist by another offensive player.

• Players are banned from pushing teammates at the line of scrimmage on punts and field goals.

• Addition of replay review for game clock at end of half, game, overtime if more than 1 second is on the clock.

This could be another reason they let Unger go. No more chop blocks will disrupt the zone blocking scheme a bit and Unger's power blocking wasn't up to par. Just ANOTHER example of Pete and John being in front of what is coming down the line.

That's the "Julian Edelman, Kam Chancellor Superbowl hit" Rule :D When you're good (or when teams cheat and leave wobbly players on the field), they make rules about it.

• Players are banned from pushing teammates at the line of scrimmage on punts and field goals.

This is a good rule because they would let some teams go overboard on it, yet penalize other teams by calling "jumping on another player" call.

Now if they'll just enforce it evenly.

Need high resolution replays and jail terms for that. Not going to happen. Need laws requiring the nfl to enforce the rules fairly.

NFL football is not a sport requiring rule enforcement, but is a gladiatorial show whose purpose is to earn money.

The nfl is not required by anyone to enforce the rules fairly, and it can make more money by unfair rule enforcement.

This is Capitalism 101.

That's not what it said, reread the post above yours.

Funny, there's two SB rules in there: one for getting Edelman off the field (although no one can still explain how he played the rest of the game) and one for WRs getting lit up after a INT (wasn't that Thomas ?)

I wonder, if that rule was in place, if our Medical personnel could call Time Out for the opposing players, if that teams' medical personnel wouldn't ? It's obvious NE is covering up the fact that Edelman had a concussion.

Well we all know that Belichick would be concerned about player safety above all else, wanting to add all those cameras and all, this way they could make sure that players were not hurt. :)

So you can still push a teammate on regular plays past the line of scrimmage? That is a huge part of our Offense on Lynch's short runs.

This won't affect our O-linemen pushing Lynch in the back to gain a few extra yards, right?

Would like more info on the chop block rules. If they eliminated them completely, it would be a major rule change for almost every team, and the Seahawks would be hurt by it more than most.

the rule for chop blocks is that a RB cannot chop block anyone already engaged with another player.

It looks like the proposed chop block rule is limited to chop blocks committed by FBs/RBs outside the tight end area. I don't think our RBs typically go low, but it could affect FBs who dive at defenders who are already engaged by a receiver or tight end. So, yeah, teams that still utilize FBs or other two-back variants are probably most likely to be impacted (SEA included). Teams that do a lot of end-around stuff might be affected too (since RBs will need to be more disciplined on their blocks).

I believe it only effects special teams plays.

I saw on NFL Network that there will be "third party medical personnel spotters" who have the authority to stop the game for a medical time out if they see a player looking disoriented. They didn't say anything about team's staff being able to call it.

I kinda see this series of rules changes as somewhat more in the subjective realm again. Not sure of the outcome yet. But I do see where it can be exploited. A LOT.

Yep, look at the playoff game at Dallas where the Lions got hosed bigtime as exhibit A.
