I glanced through the article so i didn't see if this bit was in there. It also allows players that are unsigned due to compensatory pick gamesmanship to be signed with a team before team activities really get going and they can get acclimated.

Yep that is why they changed it. Said very few FA were signed after June 1 last year and most of them to minimum salaries anyways. So opening this up gives the FAs now better chance to catch on with a team and be ready to go.

As bad as the League is at handling punishments, it has done well to give players and teams every opportunity to find the right fit. Stretching the draft over 3 days, the veterans' combine, moving the compensatory date, etc.

It doesn't hurt the League that most of these changes bring a financial reward in the form of more advertising opportunities, but still.
