Hard to get massacred by the cap when you sign a guy to a deal worth 870K

Was this the guy on the Packers hands team that ended up using his head?

When they have to pay their incredibly average CB 16m a year?

The Panthers are actually just now getting out of "salary cap hell" that former GM Marty Hurney put them in. Now that they have arguably the best GM in the league, recently named 2015 executive of the year, David Gettleman, they are on track to be successful for the long haul.

The Panthers strategy now is locking up the core, Cam/Kuechly/Olsen/Short/Lotulelei, and drafting well, which they have done extremely well lately.

Here's a great look at how bad the Panthers cap situation actually was: http://grantland.com/features/the-roste ... tent-best/

And another look at how they got out of cap hell http://grantland.com/the-triangle/how-t ... re-remade/

Panthers aren't going to pay Norman 16m per year. If they were, he'd be signed long term by now.

Fair questions. But comparing age/bio/stats/and now, contracts, of Jeremy Lane and Brandon Boykin is quite interesting.

Meh. There is a reason why nobody took a flier on him earlier, and he settles for a one year bargain deal.

You mean like Michael Bennett?

There's no shortage of really talented players who end up slipping through the cracks of the market and signing one year deals to get another spin at the wheel.

Last year Crabtree signed a one year deal and the Raiders tore it up and gave him big money eight games later.

Not saying Boykin will be as good as Bennett or even Crabtree, but if you're a Panthers fan you've got to absolutely love this signing, as there's the chance of high reward with practically zero risk, and it also gives the Panthers a hair more leverage with Norman.

exactly.

These types of signings have been David Gettleman's MO since he came to Carolina.

Just off the top of my head, here's a list of castoffs that Getttleman has signed that either became serviceable starters or turned their careers around and cashed in the following years:

Mike Mitchell
Ted Ginn
Roman Harper
Kyle Love
Kurt Coleman
Michael Oher
Mike Remmers

This offseason they have added DT Paul Soliai and Brandon Boykin for cheap. Winning franchises are not the ones landing the top free agents with big money contracts.

MB signed for a one year $5 million dollar deal and bet on himself. BIG difference between that and a 5'10" CB that sat on the open market and signed for pennies. .

It's not about the big money and winning day 1 of free agency - who had their feet kicked up watching other teams get stupid during the first couple days? Denver, Carolina, Seattle, Arizona, Green Bay, New England (hit on Long and McClellin during the 2nd wave).

It's about finding nice value to round out your roster a little later in the offseason - McDaniel, Kevin Williams, Farwell, Hauschka, Schofield.

Boykin is a solid signing by a well-run organization, he's been a pretty good player, isn't old and is probably pretty motivated. 3 teams in 3 years and the contract he just signed tells a player that his career is on life support, so if he's going to play his best ball it'll be now.

Panthers aren't going to pay Norman 16m per year. If they were, he'd be signed long term by now.

By the way this is true. He is born and raised in the Carolinas and he either takes a hometown discount or he walks next year. Should he equal or surpass his 1st team All-Pro play of 2015, then a second tag may be an option, and, at that point, he'd be 30 years old. He's simply not getting that kind of money on a long term deal with the Panthers.

I could have sworn I read that somewhere, but looks like he wasn't a probowler. My mistake.
