Report: Former Saints DE Will Smith shot dead in New Orleans

Witnesses and law enforcement sources have identified a man shot dead in New Orleans on Saturday night as former Saints defensive end Will Smith, The Times-Picayune reports.

According to police, a man was killed and a woman was wounded in a New Orleans double shooting on Saturday night. The female victim sustained gunshot wounds to the leg.

In their report, authorities say the victim was involved in a three-car collision, and was shot multiple times in an ensuing altercation. One of the drivers is in custody and being questioned by police.

Smith last played in 2012 with the Saints, recording 33 total tackles in 16 games with six sacks. A first-round pick in 2004 out of Ohio State, Smith spent his entire 10-year career in New Orleans. He was 34.

Just got an alert about this. Based on the story I read, the shooter is alleged to have rear-ended Smith's car, which lead to Smith's car hitting the car in front of him. Smith and the shooter are said to have had some words and then...

The women shot in the leg is apparently Smith's wife.

Sad. Things like this shouldn't happen, and yet, they do.

apparently (albeit not confirmed) this cardell hayes's father went nutjob back in 2005 and went to a pharmacy knife wielding and was put down by the NOPD. the hayes family was awarded a 4 million dollar settlement due to "excessive force"

Such a senseless thing to happen. I'm deeply saddened. Apparently Pierre Thomas showed up to the scene? He is seen in photos accompanying the report online. Obviously, he is upset. Tough to see that. Smith's wife, too. (punch to the gut sigh..........)

I also found out that a good friend of mine suffered a gunshot wound this morning (we heard in one of his legs.) So, awaiting to hear about his condition. He was being transported by ambulance when we received word. I hope and trust he will be ok.

NEW ORLEANS — The suspect in Saturday's fatal shooting of former New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith previously filed a lawsuit against the city after officers killed his father, according to local reports.

One of the officers named in the lawsuit told The Advocate he met with Smith for dinner shortly before the shooting.

Cardell Hayes' father, Anthony Hayes, was shot and killed by New Orleans police officers in 2005 after he got into an argument with an employee at a local pharmacy while armed with a pocket knife, according to The Advocate. The shooting took place just blocks from the area where Cardell Hayes, 28, allegedly shot Smith to death Saturday.

Cardell Hayes sued the city, saying officers should have used non-lethal force to incapacitate his father, who was described by The Advocate as mentally unstable.

The case was settled for an undisclosed amount in 2011.

In his lawsuit, Cardell Hayes named former New Orleans police Capt. Billy Ceravolo as one of the officers who fatally shot his father. Cervolo told The Advocate he met with Smith and former Saints running back Pierre Thomas for dinner in the Lower Garden District shortly before the argument and subsequent shooting that claimed Smith's life.

Well, things getting more interesting, shows why you shouldn't be so quick to jump to conclusions.

Cellphone video taken moments after former New Orleans Saints star Will Smith was shot dead recorded an unidentified bystander saying the athlete was the first to claim to have a gun.

The witness doesn’t name the men exchanging angry words — but he seems to accuse Smith of being the aggressor before he was killed in the Lower Garden District at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday.

“This guy was like, ‘Get out of the f–king car, I have a gun,’ ” the witness said allegedly of Smith in footage posted Monday by the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

“And he [supposedly then referring to suspect Cardell Hayes] goes, ‘F–k y’all, I got one, too,’ and he [Hayes] grabs a gun and shoots him [Smith] in the back. He’s dead.”

Video shows Will Smith's car hitting Cardell Hayes' car and then driving off. Looks like Smith was the one doing the hit and run.
