I would be really interested to find out the hard numbers on attendance decline this season. Every single NFL game I watch (not including the Hawks home games which are always sold out) whenever the camera shows the stands I see tons of empty seats. Doesn't seem to matter what part of the game. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th quarter. The announcers don't mention it (probably told by the NFL not to) but it's glaring in some games.
I think it was the Steelers SNF game last night where the entire lower endzone section was empty at one point. It was surreal.
