The XFL was started by WWE’s Vince McMahon and will debut in 2020. The yet-unnamed Seattle franchise will play home games at CenturyLink Field, sharing with the Seahawks and the Seattle Sounders of the MLS.

Seattle is joined by New York, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Tampa Bay and Washington, D.C., as the host cities. Teams in the new-look XFL will have 40 roster spots and will participate in a 10-week season.

The league is said to have simplified rules that will make the pace quicker. It intends to find players who are struggling to find a job in the NFL, and from the college ranks.

They're bringing back the XFL? This XFL?

The XFL was a professional American football league that played its only season in 2001. NBC and the WWF both lost $35 million on their $100 million investment in the league's inaugural season. Although committing to broadcast two seasons, NBC pulled out of its broadcast contract for the XFL after the inaugural season, citing the poor viewership. While WWF owner Vince McMahon initially stated that the XFL would continue without NBC, and proposed the addition of expansion teams, unfavorable demands of the league by UPN hastened the XFL's demise, and the league ceased operations entirely in May 2001 a month after the championship game. The Los Angeles Xtreme were the XFL's first and only champions. McMahon conceded that the league was a "colossal failure".

Good luck with that Vince. I'm sure it'll be totally different this time.

In an era where live sports drive TV ratings, I would not be surprised to see the XFL stay around for a while. There is an obvious niche for physical football and a surplus of guys who can play in a professional league that have zero options outside of Canada.

Assuming they have a big enough investment team behind them that is willing to lose money early while they attempt to garner a share of the market it can work. Finding a sustainable revenue stream is much easier in today's market than it was in 2000. I'm pretty sure WWE owns their own distribution now and they can offset much of their losses before needing to close up shop. Really the only way the XFL folds like the original is if the product is so bad on the field that no one tunes in.

Now this franchise would be a good candidate for the Kraken mascot.

This could work. COULD. They are going to play in the spring which is smart.

Some things that look really interesting.

The pace of play is a focus. They want games to be under 2 hours.

Players have one-year contracts.

45 players per team.

Per game pay will be higher than CFL per game pay.

Will forbid any player with a criminal record from participating.

Most the teams are playing in MLS stadiums.

Looks like he learned a lot of lessons from his first time around and a lot of this version will be a direct shot at the NFL and their blunders over the past two decades.

Nobody.

*Ok, not literally nobody, but not enough people for any/all of these leagues to succeed.*
