Rams have an insanely good offensive line, and they’re all great run blockers.

That lowers the prime opportunities for him to break tackles at or near the line of scrimmage.

He’s benefited a lot from those big running lanes, clearly.

I attribute Gurley's success to two things.

1. All-Pro LT Andrew Whitworth
2. McVays schemes

I feel the same way about Gurley as I did about Alexander. He has some world class blockers putting him in the right places. He's a good running back, and his line gives him the opportunity to do great things. He's taking advantage of it.

You would need to look critically at what this stat reflects. For example, Christian McCaffrey, 18.1 %, had a field day with Seattle, but he's middle of the field with this stat.
Says to me these guys run where there is no tackle to be broken, rather than the bulldozer method.

If Gurley is a fraud then Eckler, Cook and Lewis are elite? There's more to being a great running back then how many tackles you break.

Speed kills. You can't break a tackle if they can't touch you. It also produces big runs which are chunk plays. I liken it to a receiver who is fast and a burner vs a tight coverage catcher.

I get accused of pooing on the Rams a lot but this one of the rare times I disagree. Gurley is the MVP of the league IMO. I honestly don't believe the Rams offense would be top 10 without him. He is the focal point of their misdirection scheme and there are maybe 3 running backs in the league capable of doing what he's doing.

That just gives him more time to build up steam, making it easier for him to break tackles against smaller guys in the secondary...if anything, he should have MORE broken tackles. It's not like he's breaking 50-60-70-yard runs off untouched every game.

I have to agree with the OP on this one. Overrated.

whatever else is happening, defenses apparently aren't getting as many chances at tackling gurley. he's getting sprung into the clear with regularity by his o-line.

3 TDs in week 5 against the Seahawks. With no Todd Gurley it would have been 2-0 instead of 0-2 against the Rams. To be sure, not overrated.

His performance dropped like a rock when his O-line wasn't great. (2016)

Man, you could only fit like three running backs side by side through most of those holes. Pretty tough life Gurley has, playing behind the Rams' O-line.

Would not matter, Bevell would have to call for him to get the ball........................

Exactly.

If Lynch or any Hawk RB was doing as Gurley IS: you would fall face to earth in worship.

IS includes reality, btw.
