I think the Chiefs viewed Tyrann Mathieu as the more versatile choice which facilitates getting advantageous matchups. Mathieu is also younger at 26. His best years are probably ahead of him. And, he is building on a really outstanding track record. I'm incline to believe that Matheiu was the Chiefs 1st choice over Earl.
